Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I have Muscovy eggs, I also have a broody on Muscovy eggs, set on may 26, I can let you know when they hatch, if you want to try sliding some under your broody.
yeah that could work! What do you think of that breed? The Pekin says very close and doesn't go far. Also if I can get close to her, she hisses and shakes her butt at me, silly because she is right in my way! Lol when is your hatch date?

Looks like she has been broody since @ the 8th, so your hatch date would be around the 30th, giving 35 day date time... almost perfect timing!!!! Wing I love you!! I'll have to bring you some brownies ;)

I often cut corners and still have a lot of success (and a few failures, which I try to learn from). If I did what the gardening books recommend, I'd never even get started, I just don't have that much time or energy. I made raised beds in an established garden area and just shovelled the soil from between the beds into them. If any more was required, they would still be a pile of boards with weeds growing around them!

I don't mean to criticize the way others do things, they probably get better results, but sometimes "good enough" is all you can manage, often we even have to scale down what seems good enough.

This year my garden focus is on teaching my younger nieces (10 and 12), the basics of gardening. We are doing some fun stuff (indian corn from a cob they saved from last fall's decorations) as well as practical stuff (potatoes under a lot of mulch). They actually like to weed, and they are actively learning to recognize the weeds and the vegetables. I'm so proud of them.

Thanks for the help! I have raised beds and I set the up the lazy way. I plopped the raised beds where I wanted themon the grass, stacked twoof the so that they are 14" deep, and dumped an excellent quality soil mix in. I figured the grass underneath would get smothered and add nutrients as it rotted. This ladybug effective way has worked very well for me. And this year I also got two surprise potato plants from mini tubers left in from last year! Bonus!

Saying hi! Just moved to Westmoreland county from upstate NY. Seeing who is near me.

Has anyone grown pumpkins successfully in containers?

I have been reading about how much soil and water they need....................tons!

I have several started...................so I also wonder how well they transplant.

The type of pumpkin I planted is: small sugar......and then I have smaller decorative pumpkins I don't recall the name.....maybe baby pumpkins?

I really want to grow them for the chickens to enjoy in the fall......and me to enjoy watching the growing process........

we had some growing very successfully in containers last fall since we opened up a pumpkin we were carving for Halloween and there were already stated sprouts! But, once December came along, they got too big for the dogs to stand it anymore and they devoured them :/ I know that probably doesn't help you any but you reminded me of it. They were doing so well too!

My wife works at the indiana hospital. We are living in here dad's old house for now. How's the area near you and how chicken friendly are people in this area?

well, it is a 45 minute drive for me to get to IRMC (Banks Twp).... but much of Rayne Twp, Montgomery Twp, Green Twp , Cherry Hill Twp and The Mahoning Twps are much closer and are mostly rural with small farming being a normal thing. I don't know of any ordinances outside of some of the boros which would affect chicken keeping. As far as the folks being chicken friendly... I think it is like nearly any other venture. If you are respectful of the neighbors property and prevent odor or noise from being a problem then you will most likely not have any comments.... but check local zoning first for anywhere you are interested in settling... If local zoning says no birds then you will need to explore further.
