Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I know these are hatchery birds and not quite the same but here are the 30 some birds that hubby got from tsc, all in a grow out pen and about 11 weeks....I do not see any roosters, it should be evident by now,

Good for the egg business, but I need a rooster to keep the breed going.

Yes, I know the pen dedesperately needs cleaned
I'd love to know how he managed to get 30 birds at TSC and wind up with all pullets??? I think someone packed a hatchery flat wrong! I would hate to have been the person who got the crate these girls were supposed to be in! About now they are realizing they got a flock of roos!

It is almost a bummer, he kept asking me if I got the Roo's seperated yet so we can figure out what we have for the freezer, well I can not seperate the boys if they are not there....we figured a straight run bin would of been about 70% roo's

Usually it is... but I did get 6 Black Giants last year figuring I would get 2 or maybe 3 hens if I was lucky for the larger body frame genetics to add into the layer flock, and just send the roosters to freezer camp. Ended up with all 6 being hens! I did sell off 4 of them, the last 2 are now broodies for me, one of them setting now for the second time this year! So much for hatchery bird averages! LOL

Hello! My name is Trish. I just joined here and I'm from Canonsburg, PA. (I grew up in Eighty Four, I didn't move far... LOL) Does anyone know Canonsburg laws for keeping chickens? Thanks!

Hi, I live in Claysville, Did live in canonsburg but that was before the coops went up....

Met a guy at a swap who told us he bought 25 straight run chicks and ended up with 24 roos.

I bought 6 BBS Ameracaunas last fall. They were my first non-hatchery Ams and it took me about 5 months to be sure of the sexes -- all male. The statistical chance of that is less than 3%!

And only 5 were Ams, the 6th was a BCM, also male. I'm not buying expensive "straight run" chicks any more. I'm also gotten more serious about switching to auto-sexing or sex-linked crosses for next year's hatch. The remaining problem being how to find homes for the male chicks. I really need to find a friend who wants to pasture raise meat birds.
