We went and picked 20 lbs of blueberries first thing this morning. Anyone do anything special with them besides freeze them? This is the first time we did them lol.
Thats a lot of blueberries...thinking cobbler, pie, jam, some frozen, maybe blueberry ice cream.....I don't know what to do with the other 10 lbs.....lol

We're planning on doing cobbler and pie in the middle of winter :) jam and pancake syrup when I find some time. Ice cream sounds great and some will get mixes into smoothies eventually lol

Wine? I think ten pounds is enough for two gallons.

wine is an awesome idea. We're not good at making it yet though but we can try!

Funny thing is, it only filled 4 gallon ziplock bags so we're going to go pick at least another 20 lbs soon lol. I want them to last the whole way until next season :)

so I got excited tonight. I was REALLY late scraping off the poop boards tonight, like 7 pm late lol. I lost track of time and didn't realize how late it was. Well, while I was in there, as everyone was putting themselves to bed, Lily and Daffodil each hopped in a nest box and tried it on for size. Didn't lay anything but they were checking them out. 10 minutes before that, I heard the egg song, loud and clear from the coop before I went in so I have no clue who was singing it but still. It would be so awesome if those two started laying before the weekend too. My brother and his girlfriend are coming home from Chicago to visit and staying with us. I'd love to make them a "home grown" egg breakfast. We only have 3 little pullet eggs in the fridge at the moment.

I am always amazed at chicken behaviors....so here's today's saga:

In my grow out pen is an outcast orp and five young'ins...(a silkie, and OE, a CCL girl, one Dork mixed, and an adolescent CCL roo) If I am around, I will let my outcast out to free range under my supervision,(big roo will not tolerate her)...and I let the young'ins out to free range with the big girls.....

Each group interacts with each other but the two have kept somewhat separate....till tonight...

By the time I got home from the salt mine, all the young'ins, save the OE had entered the big girl pen/coop....I opened the grow out pen and the OE immediately went to the coop...but the rest decided (given the thunder storms) to hang with the big girls....

I am going to go out after the rain stops and see what's up?.....my flock dynamics are a bit messed up and there is no solid pecking order..

Finally made it over to CC's last night, let the new adventure begin. Hubby got his rabbits from CC, I think he said they are Californian rabbits...bigger than I thought they would be,,,, I know very little about rabbits, and it has been many years since hubby had them as a kid... The pigs will come in the fall, so I would say that by next spring, I should be set really good for meat.. If only I had time for a large garden and to can the stuff, I would need very little from the grocery... On a side note, a city friend of mine always say's that she will just come to live with me if the big SHTF adventure ever hits,,,,,,silly girl needs to remember that human would be a protein source also.... just kidding, that one is even beyond me. Off to see what rabbits can eat, do they eat bugs like mealworms, or are they mostly vegetable eaters.
SHTF adventure? :idunno
Hello everyone. The new coop is finally finished. Not sure if the girls like it, though. They complain to me constantly. I refused them access to the small coop because I want them to get used to the new one. Here are some pictures. The outside of the playhouse The finished product in place. The nesting boxes with a poop board to the right. Bunty is the only one who uses the poop board area. I added a nesting ladder as you could see at the bottom right because the others do not want to roost on the higher area. If anyone has suggestions on improving this area, please share. Babs Ginger Mac - up close and personal The ladies enjoying breakfast in their new pad! The only one missing is my orpington, Bunty. She was camera shy.
That is gorgeous! They don't know how lucky they are!

I got three eggs today, woohoo! They're pretty teeny though, hope they will get bigger as the girls grow. I have a calendar by the back door and I try to write down everyday how many eggs I get everyday, just for curiosity's sake.

come to Patton! There are two blueberry farms within 10 minutes of me in either direction lol

I have an egg tracker on my phone that I've been using lol. The app is called poultry pal. It needs some updates and everything but you can create a profile for each of your birds and track your egg profess daily. You can put in how many you got and your biggest and smallest. Stuff like that. I like it :) everything Cloud has been laying is only like 4-5 cm long and about 1 Oz so far (not counting that whopper of a first egg double yolker lol)
