How much is a dressed out rabbit, Wing? I did find a place that would order them but they'd be about $25 per rabbit. That seemed a bit high to me to just try it. I've never had rabbit and my husband has only had it once. Before I start building hutches, I need to know if we even like it.

Generally rabbit costs $7-8/ lb from shops.
Legally in PA, I can't sell processed rabbit unless I'm a licensed inspected butcher shop. It's not like chicken.

I know you asked wing, just thought I'd pop in with an answer.

$25 for a meat rabbit is about average.

That sounds VERY weird. If it were I, I would tell him all the chickens for sale are gone.
At least if you eat them, you know what happened. If someone like that gets them, who knows?
This summer in the local news, twice, once in or near Allentown and once towards the Poconos, in a cemetery a rooster's head was found, and in the second case they just said chicken head. One of them had lines drawn around it.
Too strange for me.

Seen a stand at green dragon selling rabbit, they are asking 7.99 a pound and told me they sell 5 or 6 a week at that price..

And yes PA has that weird law, I can process poultry and sell it but somehow rabbit is different, easier to process by the way...
But I can sell a live rabbit and offer to show you how to process, and that is perfectly legal...

Price will vary for me in depending what is wanted, I plan to keep the pelts for my son in law who is trying his hand at tanning hides...
Sold 2 for 15 each to a snake breeder, he said that he often has to pay 20 for a 6 to 7 week old.....

These prices might be the reason rabbit meat is not common in most houses, hard to feed a family on those prices...
Can not speak for CC but I would give a good deal to someone who is just trying the meat for the first time.

I'm glad there is SOME chance that they'll start laying in the winter! For now, should I have the nest boxes blocked off? They've been sleeping in them... I didn't even have straw or bedding in there but they keep going in to sleep (and then pooping in them). Should I block them off for a few weeks to break that habit? They do have a roost and a couple of the chickens do sleep up there (just the roosters and one of the black australorps).

Yeah, block them off until they are sixteen weeks.

My hubby just got a weird phone call. We have an ad on craigslist for 3 hens for sale. The person calls asking if we have roosters. Hubby said we do (we were going to process them this weekend but it rained). The guy says he wants an all black one and a black and brown one for eating. He wanted to know what they looked like and we send some pictures. He was really interested in what they looked like. If you are going to eat them why so interested in the color and pattern. Then he asked if we have Muscovy ducks for sale. Hubby said we have Muscovy ducks but they aren't for sale. No where in my ad did I say I had ducks for sale. We found that very odd. I hope he doesn't want to do anything horrible with the roosters. :( Does that phone conversation seem odd to anyone else?

Oh that is weird, I agree with Dekel, eat them yourself...Who know what they would endure if someone like that got ahold of them.

I would recommend buying one live and processing it yourself if you are thinking about raising meat rabbits. It's been a long time since I helped kill and process a rabbit, but I remember it being different than a chicken, and I would not be able to kill another one. For some people it's not a problem, but better to find out with a purchased meal than to invest all that time and effort first before trying to process your first one.

And don't ever name the ones you are going to eat. Good rule in general, essential for rabbits.
