Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Horrible start to my day and it's all my fault. I had finished the Silkie house Wednesday, but didn't get a door on it, I figured it would be okay for a couple days. All four of my Silkies are gone. I'm sure it was the fox. I only found one carcass. I feel so terrible. This was all preventable and I'm so ticked off at myself. All my other seven were safe in their coop with a closed door.

I am sad for you and your silkies. I know you'll feel badly about this for a while, I am still kicking myself over mistakes from last winter. All we can do is resolve to learn from these things and use it to provide better care for the remaining ones.

Seems like the predators are especially hungry and brazen this time of year - a warning to all of us to take extra care.

^ Very cute Aurora! Your babies are so big!

Thanks! It's amazing how fast they grow isn't it?

Yes! These are the "babies" my hen Penelope hatched this summer:

17 weeks already!

Gorgeous! Are they as noisy as people say?

Wing, a skunk?!! Ha. I got chased by one once, not fun.

Barbie, tilapia in the basement? I am beyond jealous. That is so awesome.

So we woke up to the ground covered in snow, and my Bella missing... I haven't been out with the critters at all lately, and am looking forward to checking goats and looking for Bella today. It's not like her to run off, but I've had her electric collar off for a bit now giving her poor skin a break from those prongs. I'm sure she's not far.

Stake, that's the Lionel train set my husband and his brothers grew up with. The grandsons are entranced. They are moving back in here this weekend, looking forward to seeing them everyday again, and helping my daughter get back on track.

They can get a little annoying when you're trying to talk to guests outside. Or when they're standing on your picnic table while you're trying to eat. Or on top of your car.

But they're so stupid and hilarious, they're totally worth it. People exaggerate how loud they are.

Quick question. Is 110 degrees too hot for the chicken water? We're looking for a heater for their water bucket and it'll heat up to 110 in a 5 gallon bucket. I have nipple waterers on the bottom to keep from freezing. Is that too hot? I'm trying to decide eager to get it or not

Oh Anne. I am SOOO sorry. Don't beat yourself up, this happens to all of us. You are reminding me right now that my Orpington run is not secure, so if their coop door is not closed at night, they are not safe. I need to fix that.

Thanks guys. Amazing news! Like a Phoenix from the fire, my largest brown Silkie made it! I was out with the girl a few minutes ago, and I heard another chicken, and sure enough it was my brown Silkie int my next door neighbors yard! I don't know how it got over the fence, but I'm glad it did! At least I have one. :)

For sale: two 5-month old call drakes. I have too many boys. They're very nice, passive little guys. And they're super cute. I don't know if the brown one is grey or snowy, he still needs to feather out. I think grey, but he has a snowy looking breast.

Really needing a white hen, would love to trade or cash is fine. Just make an offer :)

No one's interested? Takin them to a swap Sunday. I'd much rather have them go to someone I kinda know. :)

Omg! I know the problems with ducks, and not ready to eat their meat or eggs. I managed to stay away from them. You, little girl... You have the cutest ducks I have ever seen!! I would be there to buy them today if I were home! So cute!!!!

I'm sure Bella will come back. Hope you see her soon.

That sounds too warm to me. Probably wouldn't hurt them, but it also is a lot of energy to keep 5 gallons at that temperature. Brooders are kept at 95 for chicks and I believe a chicken's body temp is around 105, so I doubt it is deadly.
Is it a bird bath heater? That is what I would be looking for, or a small pond heater. Something that just keeps it from freezing hooked to a thermocube outlet so it only comes on at low temperature.

Hugs for Anne, no beating yourself up, these things happen and we learn our most valuable lessons this way......
Blarney, fingers and toes crossed for Bella.. my newfoundland used to wander and sleep in very heavy wooded area's. Hope that is he case with Bella.

Need some idea's for a one person Thanksgiving. Just found out hubby will be working noon till 10. .. I will most likely pull a split chicken out f freezer and just have that for dinner...

Mis calculated feed needed from mill.. heading out shortly to tsc to pick up enough to last till Monday....wish me luck
