I guess I am leaning towards a heated water supply. There are days that I cannot get out there every 2 hours to change out their ice to water. So, what do you all use to keep the girls in fresh unfrozen water?

I use these. Work great. Last year one of them died when it was -30 below but hopefully we don't get that cold again! Having unfrozen water is such a luxury, my first year we didn't have these bowls and I had to keep going out dragging water down the hill in ice and snow.

Couldn't help myself. I'm hosting Thanksgiving this year so I splurged.

I have a 5 gallon bucket with nipple waters on the bottom. They are a pain to keep thawed rough that they can use them. I bought this at TSC and have it laying flat in the bottom of the bucket. It works pretty well. They still freeze over though if temps get too low. If I had another outlet, I'd be getting a couple of those heated water bowls that barbiegirl said about.

Pop, heard of medlar, but not Akebia. Awesome! Thanks! How are your paw paws? I want to grow them but we don't have enough room here, but it's on the list for the future. Oh, and when can I tour the farm? ;) I agree, what a brutal morning! At least it was dry though. Oh, get a room you two!
We got paw paws last year but not this year, we lost our largest tree to borers. We should get some next year again because the two trees that are left are about the same size. As far as a tour, if you ever get to Ringtown, let me know, we would be more than happy to take you for a walk around the property. My hubby knows every single tree off the top of his head. We can sit on the bench with a glass of wine and overlook the whole valley.
This is beautiful!

introducing (from right to left) Wynter, Flurry, and Fria. Fria is the Silkie mix. She's going to be hard to tell from the others. She doesn't have extra toes or black skin lol. If the last egg hatches, it "should" be blue or black, it'll be Coal :)

Midnight trying to keep them warm :)

Awwwww! Love the names.. :love. Oh, and you're getting a coyote? That's interesting.

I just went out and got a better look at the babies. Wynter is pale yellow all over and such a little cutie. Flurry is yellow worth almost a fan colored stripe down her back. She has black spots on her head. Fria also has spots on her head but she has a darker break and she DOES have the extra toes! At first glance, I missed them but I couldn't get a good look then. So I will be able to tell them all apart :) looking forward to meeting our last baby. I can still hear scratching in the shell but still no pips.

The Coturnix are fast and easy. I think they start laying at about 6 weeks. You want to keep 6 - 10 females per male if possible and they can be housed in large groups or cages with just a single male and his harem. Generally they lay an egg a day, and hatch in 16 days, so it would be pretty easy to hatch and raise 50 a month, one male and a few females would achieve that easily.

I would recommend getting a good quality strain to start with, as some strains are bread to get much larger. The Texas A&M are probably the best for meat purposes.
also its important to know that quail and chickens cannot be housed together..............there is some type of illness that the quail can give the chickens..............

I thought about doing this...........

just gotta keep them in separate areas...................

they are fast to mature and lay alot of eggs..............
