Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Mine are also completely aquatic. We got them some feeder fish over the weekend, but usually we just toss a handfull of frozen mixed veggies in about twice a month in winter

yes, definitely agree with dheltzel..you are to be commended...I have only ever known one other person to keep their turtles..he loves his(2)..made a special place in his garden for them, helps them get ready to hibernate..he is very caring.
Any one going to the Farm Show? Any one exhibiting?

omgosh..i totally forgot about it.. ..i can't even believe it...welp, there goes another year:he ...
Thanks for the advice!

I'll die laughing if you one day find a secret nest with 300 eggs in it! :duc Seriously though, hoping your girls pick up the pace in the spring.

Congrats! Can you sex them at day one by color?

haha, i'll have a party & everything will be an egg dish:p ...

Mine don't hibernate since they are in the house, but with the move, electrical issues with the rv & being nearly homeless several times, she has had ice in her tank a few times for a few hours & did fine. We just got her warmed up as soon as possible. She also spent a couple weeks in a 5 gal bucket once 2 winters ago when her tank got broken during a move & I didn't have money to replace it right away. She has spent a lot of time in my bathtub over the years to give her extra swimming room & spent most of last summer in a kiddie pool on the porch due to limited space in the rv & another broken tank. Pokey is 1 tough old girl. The kids get her out & play with her frequently.

This one is actually looking in the window from outside in the run.

@LittleMissPurdy the pictures make it look darker than it is. There's a lot of shadow under the poop boards but it's not dark. The panels actually came with 2 lights but we only have one hook up on the ceiling so we only hooked up one.
nice!!

...this may actually work!..Now, i just need them to get here & have a decent day where i don't turn into a popsicle so i can get those buggers up & on!!
Thank you Aurora! I know it's cold out there to be messing with a camera!

I have lights on a timer in my new coop. The come on at 3 or 4 in the morning and turn off at 7 AM. That seems better to me than trying to extend the evening and having it suddenly get dark when the lights go out.
that sounds good too..i am not sure if i can put these lights on a timer...will have to look things over when they get here.

Yes, certain autosexing breeds, like Legbars and Rhodebars, can be sexed at hatch as easily as the sex-link hybrids (ISA browns, black sex links, red sex link, golden comets, etc). Now that they are drier, there are 7 pullets and 3 cockerels.
Congrats! That's amazing!
I'll keep you updated as to how well it works. So far they are holding the battery at a 13 volt charge. I'll try to get some pictures in the coop (no flash) after dark to try to show how well the light works. I'm anxious to see myself. Until then, here's Fria, hanging out with that chicken in the mirror :)

Love the pic, hope she does better. :hugs
I had a cockatiel, he absolutely LOVED the bird in the mirror! He would sing /talk & whistle at himself..funny...i guess chickens wouldn't be any different. cool, if you can get a pic of the light it gives, that would be great!... On an unrelated topic... I took some pics of my ferment set-up this afternoon...just to give a visual for those wanting to know if having ferment outside is an option..the only issue i have is the lid hgets a bit froze to the cooler because of the condensation, but if i can remove it then i would think just about anyone could..it was quite froze this-morning! I did replace the cooled-off water jugs this afternoon for hotter-ones, just making sure things stay good to go.. the girls after their 4pm pre-bed meal...the inevitable "creamed-corn coma"... all stuffed and fluffed:cool: ...
It was so cold out there today!!

Any of your girls wimps with the snow? I heard some strange noises from th porch as dusk was setting in. I went out and saw my BR along with my Silkie on the back porch, the Silkie is always there at dusk. The BR wouldn't get off the porch because of the snow. I went to the coop and saw I was still missing a chicken. Then I heard flapping of wings and a big plop. I think my SLW had been trying to roost on the air conditioner or in a small weeping cherry tree. Once she plopped down, she was too scared to move. She usually never lets me touch her, but she just stood still and didn't fight me when I picked her up to put her in the coop.

Tomorrow should be interesting with the girls trying to exit the coop.

My birds usually want out and about to free-range all day, but with the single digit temperatures and snow, they all have been fluffed up on the roost. I use deep litter and let them hang in the greenhouse in Winter, and the greenhouse is where they prefer to stay. It gets really warm in there with the light and deep litter. Water does not freeze. That is probably why they want to stay in.

but yes I have babies

I'm going to have to grab my boys and Vaseline their combs first thing tomorrow morning. There's a wind chill advisory for tomorrow afternoon through Thursday of -15 to -25! AND another 3-6 inches of snow possible! It would be all fine and dandy if I didn't have stuff to do tomorrow......

Sorry only one worked out... seems to go that way usually with them though. I think their frustration gets to them (not to mention the hormones!) We just raised 3 more of his boys and 1 was pretty good but the other two were stalkers.
The little ones are adorable! In the top picture, the dark one hiding against the broody looks just huggable! So Cute!

Hi!
I am in South-central PA, Perry County to be exact. This is my first time with chickens but this Arctic blast has me worried!
