Are quail hard to hatch or house? Apparently, someone that my husband works with is giving is some quail eggs and hubby wants me to hatch some of them (imagine that!)

I'll let you know about hatching in a few days. I plan to house in cages. I've had bobwhite, and they do well in cages/pens. Sloppy eaters, lots of poo. Not much different than chickens or turkey, IMO. Just a lot less space needed.

trying to spare people the details of a bloodbath, but yes, a lot just killed for sport.
fire power will be waiting tonight.
I should add that whatever it is it carried a 12 pound scovy over a fence
Why not electric wire? Or on the coop? It really works wonderfully. Its simple & cheap.

No surprise losses - even after you kill whatever... more will come and you won't know they are back or if something new moved in until you have another loss.

Quote: you see, I have no problems with nature taking a few birds here and there, I even let a pair of hawks live in the tree line,..but 27 birds in 2 days is over extending this gratiousness that I give them.. the circle of life at this location is about to stop.

in 20 years of doing this I have never had a double bloodbath like this one.

if this is what I suspect it to be, it would have jumped an electric fence without any problems

I googled it and got this page.

http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/007/chapter3/subchapLtoc.html

I think the rule is that the birds must be from an NPIP certified flock in order to be mailed. But I'm not positive. Are you shipping the birds, or are they being shipped to you?
That page is a little better than the one I had found. Like a crooked copy of an ancient document. I found this on BYC too...a bit of help.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...he-state-received-in-extension-office-06-2012

Will be coming from NPIP stock, and I don't think too much trouble for necessary tests. But I kinda of want a "hand holding" step by step, so I don't mess it up, and have the shipment "condemned" (however they handle that, I am curious about!)

1. test for X, Y, Z

2. fill out documents, include copy of NPIP certification

3. insert into sleeve on top of shipping box.

4. ship.

5. receive and record all info for record keeping per state requirement.

Ill should try calling the PA dept of agriculture directly...so they can explain it s.l.o.w.l.y. for me.

Oh, I gotcha. I figure, nature feeds nature. These are MY chickens.

There does have to be a second barrier of some kind, IMHO it doesn't have to be sturdy, or a poultry net electric, which is pricey. The thing is...the thing doesn't run up and soar over the fence. (unless a deer, which don't eat chickens)

The other preds, investigate with their noses... seriously.. electric keeps grizzly bears from trash cans effectively. It can really help, especially after your local critters are trained to know there is no dinner for them there. They will walk on by.

Hawks are whole different thing, but like you said, they don't swoop in and kill as many as they can at once.

Food for thought.

I am sorry for your losses. Stinks.
