I want to try shipping eggs since I've never done it before and I've had several inquiries about my turkey eggs.  Would anyone be willing to be a test subject for me?  Anyone with their incubator fired up be interested in my 4 slate blue turkey eggs from today?

I have 18 already set in my incubator that are 10 days from hatching. I set 19 and only had one that was no good during candling. I've seen plenty of breeding between my male and all his girls so I feel pretty confident that all should be fertile.

Incubator is always fired up and I'm always looking for turkey. I'd even be willing to wait a couple days if you get more.

Here's a pic of my hatch....4 Olive eggers, 1CCL, and two mixes CCL over GLW/RB/Lav Orp If anybody is interested, I will probably have some extra OEs......
So cute!!
They are adorable! No matter how many times I see chick pictures I still love them! I really like the little round black one on the right, the one with the gray/white chest and throat. :love
Agreed, they are always adorable!
I want baby chickies but I don't know what the heck to do with all the eggs my 6 are giving us. Had 50 in the refrigerator until I took a dozen to our backdoor neighbor. It is just the 2 of us and we don't eat THAT many eggs.
Time to make some frittatas! Or this recipe, a Dutch puff. http://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/recipe-dutch-breakfast-puff/ I'd like to try to make one, but my girls are giving me 5-6 eggs a day and we eat 4 every morning, and my neighbors want some....
Stake----your chicks look great! Dheztle----97 chicks OMG! thats alot of chicks and you already have a bunch! lots of activity in your chicken coop for sure! My new 4 are doing well and growing growing growing..............they are about in week 3! working to socialize them so they are more comfortable being touched etc........ Does anyone know when chicks can have some grass or dirt experience? I know its good to gradually provide them with this so they build some immunity to natures germs etc..........just not sure when. also I think chick grit is not until week 8 so I wonder if they eat some grass if this will give them any digestive issues. I have offerred a hard boiled egg ........well crumbled.............I want to offer some additional treats by hand so they see my hand as something of interest instead to be afraid of.............what can I offer 3 week old chicks? thanks in advance!
From what I understand, the sooner you can get them on natural dirt, the better. Helps them to pick up beneficial bacteria and learn to forage sooner. Plus, they just like to explore! :weee

Had the realtor come to look at the house today to see what they think it would sell for and what needs to be done. They did recommend rehoming the chickens if I could. So I called the friendly lady who took my Roo and I asked (or begged sorta) if she would take my girls for a few months until we had our new place. Of course I would pay her to take care of them. She said YES! I'm so happy because it means probably a better sale of our home and I still get my girls back! :yiipchick

Chicken people are awesome people!

(Edited: rehoming not revoking) lol

Lisa:

As soon as the weather permits, I get the chicks outside in a 'playpen'...that way they are 'in the dirt scratching' and they get to meet the flock and are still protected....I've had older girls take the young ones under their protection and had the main roo take a baby boy under his wing on the roost...and the boys will always want to take care of the girls....

I start putting a handful of dirt and grass in the brooder at least by one week, sometimes sooner. That way they get to scratch and hunt for tiny bugs and get grit and make an even bigger mess.
I'm not big on super sanitary. I let them get exposed to almost anything. If raised in the pen with a broody, they are outside by day three playing in the dirt, why not if I'm raising them?

Hey folks: my last hatch has been a bit unusual...first chick at day22......three more over days 23 and 24....and on day 25 another.....when I thought I was done at the end of day 25 heard some chirps...no pipping....then about an hour later one pip...I decided to break her out ...she is still in the incubator...so far it will be x2 Olive eggers, x2 F2 Olive Eggers, one that may be a CCL/GLW, or a CCL/RB and if the last girl makes it a CCL...does any body else have these long hatch times?

Yup, any time temps aren't stable in my bator I get a staggered hatch.

I'm picking up my first turkey hatching eggs tomorrow. Do they need specific humidity during incubation? I usually incubate at 25-35% humidity until lockdown. Will that work for them too or do they need a higher humidity? They take 28 days right? They're bourbon reds if that matters.

Incubate just like chickens until lockdown, then raise humidity an extra 10-15% over what you do for chickens & drop temps 1-2 degrees for hatch. The extra humidity causes them to suffocate at the higher temps. Make sure all vents are open for hatch.

Give them a little grit or sand & they can eat anything adults can, just smaller pieces.

x2.... folks used to a clean brooder would cringe at what a broody exposes her chicks to!

I can not get my butt in gear today. Got a list a mile long and can't seem to figure out what to do first, or next, or at all. Perhaps a cup of coffee will help get this show on the road.
