Really, now where am I suppose to plant my cherry tomatoes..
I do believe this nest belongs to pair of little singing birds that hang out every morning, that's the only time I ever see them...
Watched them come out of my planter at sunrise this morning and just had to investigate....they look like little jelly beans.

Knowing where you live and the shade issues there, I suggest a new planter.

I just put three trees in and have three cheapo 1 gallon(?) Like there ones the trees at tsc are in. Want them when I bring bunny over?

Not sure I am even gonna bother planting them here, I only keep odds and ends here for a quick salad in the summer and with all the new neighbors and barking dogs and kids, I very seldom even go outside.....( not meant to be offensive, but I will never get used to my quiet neighborhood turning into a jungle of young families ).

Hey folks:

Interesting Sunday.....it would seem every chook is laying an egg in a different place, almost daily...seems yesterday was coop #2, the day before was under the neighbor's utility trailer...also watched my pair or marans eat a blue egg...thought they were messing with a golf ball I had placed....

getting ready to re-fire up the bater...set the temp to 37.6 with an offset of .3... hope this will work better, setting a dozen blue eggs....

also, think one of my seven new hatches is blind....is there any chance she could learn to follow the other chicks around???
Yes...but what about the Redtails.

Thank you. I read I think on this site that genesis has had issues with high humidity of lockdown getting into the digital stuff... Said something like don't go above 60% or something. Any problems for you?
That's a good point, I had forgotten that. It does say not to run the humidity high. I did anyway and nothing bad happened but there was condensation in places there probably should not have been.

I think the best hatcher is a homemade one. After hatching a few times in the GQF Sportsman, I switched to the old Hovabator and Little Giant. The thing I didn't like about that was the horrific mess and if I opened it, all the warm, humid air dumped out on the floor and cool, dry air replaced it, making me very hesitant to take out chicks, but they were bowling with the partially hatched eggs and that seemed bad too.

I live the one I made, it can hold 120 eggs, more if I put in a second level of hatching cages. I keep the electronics outside sitting next to it, and run all the cords through the drain hole. I didn't bother to drill any holes at all, I keep the top slightly ajar and the inner sliding windows are intentionally not airtight.

The one I made is probably larger than you need, but it could be scaled down easily.

Today we let our extra golden laced wyandotte roosters free range for the first time. Looked like they had a good time. We were working in the garden and decided to try to get the roosters back to their run. They didn't like us trying to corral them and took off. My cat was in the way and they chased her and she went running and got all puffy. It was so funny. Poor kitty.

This is funny...and true. Feel like we all know who's got what on here. My surprise package with mystery eggs had a few eggs marked 'RB' I'm assuming that they are Rhode Bars... Looks like they're all developing too. It had dark brown eggs too that I'm not sure if they are Marans or Wellsummer., guess I'll figure it out in about 2 more weeks.

It is true. We are nosy! At least I am...

I got 7 eggs and my momma taught me not to count my chicks before they are hatched. Only 2 hatched, looks like a pair. I'm trying this breed and trying to keep an open mind, but they better be phenomenal layers or they are gone, I don't have room for them and Rhodebars, and I hear they eat more than "normal" breeds. Actually, my main interest in trying them is that they are a production German breed and since my ancestry is German it seemed like a cool thing to try. GFF's description is hilarious - the point to the "fine German engineering" like that automatically translates to poultry genetics.

I do need to figure out how to pronounce the name soon.

Before they are "gone" if they are not exceptional layers, I will take the Hen :D. I have read that they eat more than normal breeds initially due to their fast growth, and then they normalize. Did you order them from GFF?

@WINGSTONE, whtever you do, don 't leave your door open or you'll have them in the house looking for a new place to make new nest, jenny wrens.
had one come in and land on the refrigerator checking the place out.
I once left the door to the attic of my garage open for a day no big deal so I closed the door the next day. Probably 3 days later I go up there AND THERE WAS A RED TAILED HAWK IN MY ATTIC! I just opened the attack double door and it flew away. But it was flying around like crazy. I dont know why it went in, in the first place. Maybe for the rats?

I swapped eggs. I'm not sure of the provenance of these, but I believe all in the US are from GFF. I thought it would be interesting to "compare and contrast" with Rhodebars. They sure look a lot alike. If I can get more, I'll let you know.

I checked 2 broodies that were in the haymow and found that they had hatched 3 chicks, so I put them and 1 broody in a cage to protect them. The other broody had enough exposure to the chicks that she abandoned the rest of the eggs.
