Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I'm in Washington, PA, close to Pittsburgh. Thoughts on what hatchery to use? I've googled and only found Moyer's, but the selection is small. Where do people in PA order chicks? :)

Meyers hatchery is close to you.

Meyer's is over an hour from me & I'm over an hour from Washington, PA. Would be 2 1/2 to 3 hrs from Washington to Meyers. It would be cheaper to just have them shipped.

Each other, lol.

What are you looking for? A lot get chicks at tractor supply and feed stores. Some of the people here have different breeds and will ship eggs if you incubate. A few may ship chicks, and there may be some people here close to you who may have something of interest.

And Welcome from the eastern part of the state!

Thanks. I was thinking of trying to find someone close in PA. I am a little reluctant to order chicks and have them shipped. I also don't necessarily want an abundance of chicks. I am establishing my flock this year, but was thinking I would probably want to add a few layers each year to keep a consistent egg flow, yes?

I bought mine from Rural King in St. Clairsville, OH this year and I have had excellent luck as far as survival.

I'm also giving consideration to raising a few Cornish Xs for meat. I'm not yet ready to do that though.

So, I have a question. I am hatching emu eggs in my incubator right now but there is more space. Can I hatch chicken eggs with them? Temp for emus is 95-96 and humidity is 30%. Will that kill chicken eggs?

nothing in the eastern migratory flyway at this point.

There is always AI around, unfortunately. There really is little the backyard chicken owner can do as it is spread by wild birds.

I am say honestly, if there is an outbreak in our area, the governmentwill come in and eradicate our flocks. I've seen it happen 35 years ago. There were hundreds of thousands ( probably millions) killed in my area at the large houses, as well as backyard flocks, although backyard chickens weren't popular then. I worked in the poultry industry moving chickens into and out of battery houses from the early '70's to mid '80's. The biosecurity measures you see now are a result of that outbreak.

I hatched some from eggs and picked some up from other PA backyard flock raisers. I also ordered some from mcmurrys and had them shipped.

I'm another 30-40 minutes out 70W from St Clairsville in Cambridge if you want to make the drive. I have over 100 eggs set to hatch this coming weekend. All from my mixed layer flock. They can lay any color.
