Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Thanks. I was thinking of trying to find someone close in PA.  I am a little reluctant to order chicks and have them shipped.  I also don't necessarily want an abundance of chicks.

Look up Freehling Farms on Facebook. They're in Kittanning PA (so about an hour and a half from you, I think) an they're lovely people. Good selection, no minimum order, and a lot of their chicks are sexed. I was just there Sunday. Highly recommend!

I'm in Washington, PA, close to Pittsburgh. Thoughts on what hatchery to use? I've googled and only found Moyer's, but the selection is small. Where do people in PA order chicks? :)
have you considered getting birds from a breeder?...they have NON- show types all the time...great opportunity to get a well bred SOP bird, depending on what types you are looking for, their are breeders of every bird imaginable

.....not to knock hatchery birds at all...just throwing another avenue out there for ya.

been getting updates multiple times a week on this from PA-Ag (Nan Hanshaw)...bio-security is still the number 1 way to help avoid this scenario, and keeping wild birds away from your own flock is also a great concern.

I am establishing my flock this year, but was thinking I would probably want to add a few layers each year to keep a consistent egg flow, yes?

I bought mine from Rural King in St. Clairsville, OH this year and I have had excellent luck as far as survival.

I'm also giving consideration to raising a few Cornish Xs for meat. I'm not yet ready to do that though.
they are excellent!! We raised Cornish X's last year...they were great natured and with proper animal-husbandry..they do NOT have the issues some speak of...treat them like any other chicken..besides the protein content in their feed, and they will be ready to process @ 8 weeks!!..we will be raising them again this year.

I'm near Delmont, PA. About 45 minutes northeast of the burgh.

So, I have a question. I am hatching emu eggs in my incubator right now but there is more space. Can I hatch chicken eggs with them? Temp for emus is 95-96 and humidity is 30%. Will that kill chicken eggs?

Sorry, but yes. I believe chickens die if kept under 97 for a prolonged period.

Question for those of you who sell hatching eggs. I put an ad on Craigslist to see if anyone is interested. The birds would be mixed breeds since they are all housed together. I have a few people who are interested but the one guy wants to know if I guarantee fertility. My last hatch was very successful (under a broody) all of them hatched but one chick died. I donated some of my eggs to the local school and so far all but one has veining. I'm only selling them for $9 a dozen. Thoughts on how I should handle this question?

I would tell him that you can't guarentee 100% fertility but. ... and then tell him your success stories. If he's willing to accept that them you'll know. If not, oh well. That's my opinion anyway.

The above answer is is good as any I can give. Anyone who hatched regularly knows fertile doesn't mean they hatch. And is it possible for a fertilized chicken to lay an infertile egg? I would some yes.

If he wants to know if you gaurentee hatch, of course no one can. I think anyone that deals with eggs regularly understands that.

can rats dig holes and tunnels or do they just use another critters tunnels

I set 3 rat traps and caught one last night...
not only can they dig holes in the ground, but give them some time and they can also put holes in cement, they have in our barn where we have the tractor parked, mice have also chewed holes in our wooden floor in the chicken house, bill puts down either old license plates or a piece of heavy tin to cover the hole, pretty soon should have a solid tin floor
