Ok, out of the 24 eggs I had in the incubator, 10 hatched, 4 were duds and 10 died. It looked like they were surrounded by water when we cracked them open. Is that from too high of humidity. Our power cord came out on day 18 or 19.

The humidity was around 74 at the time of hatch.

Has anyone ever seen an egg with a hole in it? My one chicken laid one like this about a week ago. It was not pecked, just laid that way.

On the topic of eggs, do you guys put out oyster shell all the time? Whenever I put it out, they seem to gobble it up pretty quick. Can they have too much?

Can someone recommend a local spot (I am in Conshohocken - a few miles NW of Philadelphia) to buy fodder seeds in bulk? I have been growing fodder for a few months now, but I am still learning the ins-and-outs, and not set on a specific type of seed or mixture other than it being organic.

I know you can buy birdseed, BOSS, etc. from places like Walmart, but I'd rather buy from somewhere local. Just looking for ideas - appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Ed

Ed:

There is a small bird feed place or RT30 business, in Fraiser(two blocks east of Lincoln court)......Its called Ushler's....her prices of chicken feed area bit higher than Agway or TCS, but I've bought some white clover from her in the past.....might be worth a call.....

So I need to make a bigger brooder for the chicks. Would mostly dry grass clippings be alright mixed in with pine shavings be alright for the flooring?

As long as they have access to grit, you should be OK. They might eat some of the grass, which is fine, as long as they have grit to digest it.

The roof can be as simple as a piece of wrote or screening to keep them in unless you are more concerned about keeping other things out. I have some 10 week olds in the barn in an enclosure made of 4 ft. plastic construction fence (it was free). None have flown out. Yet. It's pretty heavy fence, I just wire tied it to some uprights I made out of 2x3 and 1x3.

Just a thought on good Roos...

Yesterday took my 6 x4wk olds to the playpen to let them meet the adults....I spread some scratch outside the playpen and inside......well the roo called the big girls to eat then went to the edge of the playpen to inspect the youngin's...bent down and inspected them one by one.....and they had no apprehension at all....next he laid down next to the fence and took a nap...not a peep from anybody...the girls behaved well too....so only apprehension is moving into the coop and being penned...and the fox issues....(young chicks are fox bait)...
