Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Welcome from Cambria county! And to all the other new peeps that I missed lol.

Haven't been on much lately. Life's been crazy this week lol. Baby bird flew of into the trees again tonight. She's been eating in hey own in the cage she was in. She's definitely staying close and still answers me if I call her but tonight she chose to spend the night in the trees. I'm hoping it doesn't rain tonight and that she does ok.

That's amazing that she bonded to you so well!

GM all:

Put my last 4 from the brooder outside last night. What a relief to get them out of the house....well they were getting a bit of hazing from the other youngin's....

and, one of my 13wk OE roos has a vision problem....pretty much can't see beyond a couple of feet....I'm OK with him hanging out...and he prefers hanging out in the pen....so does anybody have any experience with vision impaired chooks?

I have a little hen who is a bit cross eyed and vision impaired and she does great except she has difficulty foraging for small pieces of scratch or treat because her aim is about 1/2 inch off so she has to peck at something 5 or 6 times for zone in on it. Once I realized her problem I made a point of feeding her treat from my hand so I could keep it in a small pile for her and make sure she got her share since it took her longer to eat.
So they do adapt well, but small adjustments can make it easier for them. Watch him very closely to see how he is coping and as long as he is maintaining weight and body condition then he should be good. I will add that since I know she has a problem I don't use any of her own eggs for hatching so it doesn't get passed on...but she has hatched and raised chicks for us. She teaches them how to beg quite well!! LOL

Yes, my albinos are vision impaired, can't see much unless it's a few *inches* from their face. What has worked for them is keeping the feed in the exact same spot all the time. Either that, or feed her separate everyday to make sure she's eating. As for treats, what has helped Allie and Bino with their aim is gradually decreasing treat size over time. Start with watermelon, then decrease to a smaller piece of watermelon, then strawberries, then grapes, and then blueberries (just an example, you can use whatever obviously). Lately, Bino has been able to pick ants off of the run walls.

Another thing with my experience is, Allie (the worse of the two, her eyes are redder) has to 'feel' everything with her beak. She'll walk up to the food or water and peck outwards until she hits some part of something and then 'feels' downward with her beak until she hits the water. Then she just pecks and stabs at the water and tilts her head up to drink.

So, there's obviously varying degrees of vision impairment and you just have to find what works best for your little guy.

Hello,

I have a question. These are my first chickens I have had them for almost 5 months, from almost 2 weeks old, from tractor supply. It looks like a chicken or 2 might have blood in their poop. I went to let them out this morning and found #1 pile and later went to go in the house and found #2 pile on the porch. I have just recently started the last type of food my brand suggests before they start to lay eggs. Anyone know what might be wrong?

You should see if you can look up the poop picture thread on here. It can help you sort out if you have a problem or not. Is it a lot of blood? Sometimes you see a little orange red in the poop, and that is just a bit of intestinal wall shedding, which is quite normal and nothing to worry about. If there is more blood, it may be Cocfi, which is bad news. You can always post a pic too if you're able. We all have seen chicken poop before! ;)

Finally spoke to my neighbor lady about her naughty kitty. She was very careful to neither admit nor deny it was her cat. Funny though, she used to have a chicken farm herself! The cat basically sneaks out all the time because she is 76 with health problems and on oxygen. I told her I will just have to keep my chicks penned up from now on until they are bigger. She had tried to tell me several times that it might have been a hawk, skunk or possum. I didn't give her a hard time, but I know this area and the predators we have. Also, one of my chicks has small puncture wounds and I have seen her cat in my yard on more than one occasion. She also said the cat usually goes out from 12-4, which is when I am at work. Oh well, I tried! :p

Today we started to process our meaties. Finally a weekend without rain!!! Hubby was piecing them out and I washed them off and put them into the food storage bags. He handed me a breast and it started to twitch. Kinda freaked me out a bit. That was the first time that ever happened to me. I was making weird noises and my hubby asked me what was up and I showed him the breast twitching. He thought that was wild lol.

I have 3 RIR, 3 Red Comets, 1 EE and a Black Star, one of the RIR's has been mounting the other hens, now she has another one of them imitating her. I think I am going to get rid of the RIR's and would love to find some Barred Rocks to replace them. When I had a roo I did not have the problem but he got too mean to keep around.

Some chicken pics. It's hard to get pics of my chicks, they move so fast and are so skiddish. You can only see two Rhodebar butts and the Maran that was injured. It is doing well thankfully! Check out the bloom on my elephant ear! This plant is like two years old, but this is the first year I put it in the ground.
