Just 40 eggs in the basket today

Impressive!!
I only got about 20, production is way down on the older ones due to molting and the shorter days.
On the plus side, I got 2 eggs from the Reese Legbars for the first time, so a second pullet is starting. Or maybe 3 are laying, I got 1 yesterday and I'm not sure who laid it.

Dheltzel, what do you do with your older layers, since you have so many?

Fooey, one of my chickens is acting off. It started yesterday morning, when I had left the coop open over night (forgive me my mother just passed and chickens are not my number 1 priority :hit). About 5:30, I was woken up by one of my chickens going nuts. I jumped out of bed and the dog followed me outside. The dog chased something off, but I couldn't see what it was. I think it was the neighbors cat, because I see it lurking around a lot frequently in the morning and night. Also, I can't see any damage to my chicken, no blood or puncture wounds. She is acting aloof and puffy, this morning, she wasn't interested in food like the other girls and went and stood under a pine tree by herself. I will try to do a better examination later today, she did fight me when I did the first look over.
We have had fox attacks, but I think he would have done more damage or not given up so easily.

In case any of you would like to read about my Mom and see a picture of her on her wedding day, we set up a go fund me account to help my Dad with final expenses.

Anne:

What you are describing sounds similar to what happened to my wyandotte hen....in my case I tried a couple doses of scrambled eggs and some electrolytes,,,on about the 6-7 day she just refused to leave the coop in the AM and I brought her inside...

I usually let them free range on the farm, the chicken version of "putting them out to pasture". Occasionally, someone wants to buy them, I'm selling 10 of them tomorrow to someone that wants them to run around their horse barn with the other chickens and doesn't care if they never lay. I expect a lot of them will go broody next spring and they will lay enough eggs for some to get hidden and new babies emerge. I can easily spare 10 or so to make someone else happy. With so many now free ranging, the number that get taken by predators is sure to go up.

I was pleasantly surprised at my Tractor Supply a few hours ago. They now carry Nutrenea! It is the same price as Purina, but I hear better things about it. I also get more coupons for it. Unfortunately, I didn't know to print any out today, Unfortunately, I spent too much. Well... Is there really such a thing when getting feed? I also bought some feed for the ducklings that hatch.

Speaking of hatching, one of my girls stole all the eggs from the box today, and made a nest on the floor. Who knows if she'll actually do it this time. She was on the roost tonight. If she stays, forget the Hatch a long. I'll use her!
Then came Walmart. $50 for the ducks. I think they may be spoiled!

I'll share with the chickens.
