Har har... These guys are a bunch of comedians in here... I hadn't even considered molting bc it's not so much feather loss as the feathers are actually chewed up/roughed up. It's hard to see enough detail in the picture. Google led me to a similar question regarding some kind of parrot and over-preening came up... The preen gland is just above the tail and it was suggested to make sure it isn't blocked or swollen since that could cause over-preening and the back above the preen gland is the most actively preened spot. Anyone ever here of this problem with chickens? If it's not feather mites it could be this maybe?
My tom turkey looked almost as naked as the poor hen in that pic when he molted! My 9-month-old hens don't look as rough as all that, but the pins did stay in on both occasions. The only time I have ever seen one of my girls 'naked' (with the feather completely pulled out) was when my bad roosters attacked her and pulled the feathers out on purpose.
I'm new here, from slatington, pa. My sister@emorems0 got me all set up with my girls back in oct, I've been loving it!!! One of my girls is having some feather issues though. The feathers on her back are looking chewed off maybe? And the fluffy stuff underneath is exposed. Same thing happening on the fluffy butt area. Any clues what this could be ftom?
