I think 2 nest boxes should be fine. If they're big enough, you may have girls share a box at times (even when the other one is empty). I have 22 hens at the moment and they all easily share the 5 nest boxes in our coop and there's rarely a "full house".

Well I personally then just must not have very sharing hens because one hops in when someone else is in there and scares the others out because after they lay there egg they sit on it for about ten to 15 minutes and then sing then egg song and make to the nearest exit but sometimes the hens laying an egg just don't tolerate another hen jumping up trying to stave them out

I have one pen with 31 pullets and a roo, but only 4 nest boxes. Don't ya know, none of them will lay in the 2 lower boxes, so I collect like 25 eggs from 2 boxes, every day. Never found a single egg in there on the floor or the poop board, always in the nest. I have seen as many as 5 pullets at once in one box (16" cubes). They really like the communal approach. Those are California Greys and BBS Ameraucanas. The next pen over has Cream Legbars and I find eggs on the floor there all the time because those girls do NOT like to share nest boxes. I think there is a line with all the pullets crossing their legs trying to wait for the one in there it vacate.

Such different approaches.
thank you all for the responses I actually found a nice easy design that makes three nice nesting boxes so that is,what I will be going with .....now any suggestions on the best way to put a roost inot my coop it will be going in on the four foot end with a clean out door underneath it, any suggestions would be great.

Wow, I take a weekend off and fell so far behind! I took a last minute trip back east this weekend for my niece's birthday party and came home to hear that hubs forgot to collect eggs for 2 days... one of the nest boxes had 11 eggs in it and surprisingly none were broken - my girls tend to kick the straw around some before they sit so the already laid eggs end up getting kicked and cracked.

I also picked up that dresser when I was back home this weekend, which means I'll have an empty van for my Easter trip... Looks like the chicken train will be open for larger cargo if anyone needs anything bigger (ahem. roosters) that need re-homing. For the newbies on the list my route goes from Pittsburgh, across the turnpike to the Lehigh Valley, and back again. I am happy to transport any birds along the way.

Whoever had the rooster to re-home in Northampton, if you find someone here who wants him, I could help with transport depending on where his new home is located.

I am planning to make a stop at Dheltzel's on the way back... as I recall, he is not that far from Hacker Hollow. I forget who was looking for Silkies... RhodaRed? I don't think Hacker Hollow is on BYC often (and I don't remember their screenname) but you can find them on FB. If you want to arrange to buy some silkies from them, I may be able to swing down there and pick them up for you - we'd just have to meet up along my route somewhere to get them to you. I don't think Mcveytown is too far from the turnpike, certainly better than driving to Coatesville if you really want silkies. They *just* added a picture of new silkies they have hatching https://www.facebook.com/HackerHollowFarm/

To whomever was looking for fertile eggs for the school project near Pittsburgh... we have barnyard mixes (large fowl) available and can easily donate if you can meet me somewhere....

Edit to correct spell check 'mis'correction!

And I'll add if anyone in the Lancaster area ever needs school project eggs, I'll always provide. Educational eggs are free.

This is about to get VERY interesting! This will be my biggest hatch to date (so far)
