I think 2 nest boxes should be fine. If they're big enough, you may have girls share a box at times (even when the other one is empty). I have 22 hens at the moment and they all easily share the 5 nest boxes in our coop and there's rarely a "full house".
Well I personally then just must not have very sharing hens because one hops in when someone else is in there and scares the others out because after they lay there egg they sit on it for about ten to 15 minutes and then sing then egg song and make to the nearest exit but sometimes the hens laying an egg just don't tolerate another hen jumping up trying to stave them out
thank you all for the responses I actually found a nice easy design that makes three nice nesting boxes so that is,what I will be going with .....now any suggestions on the best way to put a roost inot my coop it will be going in on the four foot end with a clean out door underneath it, any suggestions would be great.I have one pen with 31 pullets and a roo, but only 4 nest boxes. Don't ya know, none of them will lay in the 2 lower boxes, so I collect like 25 eggs from 2 boxes, every day. Never found a single egg in there on the floor or the poop board, always in the nest. I have seen as many as 5 pullets at once in one box (16" cubes). They really like the communal approach. Those are California Greys and BBS Ameraucanas. The next pen over has Cream Legbars and I find eggs on the floor there all the time because those girls do NOT like to share nest boxes. I think there is a line with all the pullets crossing their legs trying to wait for the one in there it vacate.
Such different approaches.
