I am attempting to attach a pic from the day my girls arrived from mypetchicken.com.
The first one is the day they arrived in the mail.

This is one of Violet, when she discovered the box in the storage space while I was cleaning one day. She thought it was the perfect place to lay her egg.

mm

ETA: The box top was kind of in the shape of a fat plus-sign, and fit flat on top of the box, with the arms of the plus-sign fitting between the corners that are sticking up... Then it was taped down so that the tape didn't cover the air holes on the sides. (I'm not sure if that is worded clearly, but I don't know how to draw on here...sorry.)

I am in the process of getting a transport box approved by the post office for shipping. SoI believe i can ship some of my surplus pet roo to homes. ok, out of curiosity, how many of you have shipped chickies through the mail? And what does your shiiping boxes look like? And, when you get chicks in the mail, what kind of box do they come in? Yes, I have never gotten chicks from the mail, always from a person or some hatching eggs from someone local, so i don know these things.

If I am gonna get serious about becoming a breeder, lol, it would be nice to "see" these things.

I didn't have time to read the whole thread, but wanted to say "Hello from central PA!". My first winter with chickens, a little nervous! I have 8 girls in my flock, no eggs yet. Hoping soon!

Welcome!!

This is our first winter too. But to tell you the truth, I think the heat is far worse on the chickens. I lost SO many this past summer.

I was thinking maybe they would be interested in 4H, but I don't really know much about it. What do you guys think??
4H is great! We are not in it yet up here in PA (my son has to wait to turn 9 in Feb) but we were involved in the Cloverbuds in NC and all three of my olders LOVED it.

I was wondering if anyone here raises bantam cochins and if you would be interested in a trade for polish, orps or brahma (all bantams...)? Just thought I would put it out there. All my birds are BQ or better with the exception of 1 or 2 brahma (fused toes). I would be willing to trade like for like.

Quote: You say Balut duck, this would explain why she keeps asking if I will be getting any ducks, wonder if the duck eggs taste different than the chicken eggs ??
Do you know how they make them, that pic does not look like a normal incubation, looks like higher temps are used, I know this topic is gross but curiosity wants to know.
I would just ask the lady that buys the eggs, but her english is not real good (I think Phillipine )

you all mentioned the snow word!

our forcast for this week is nice wheather. Thursday is maybe gonna be around 80 here, just in time for my two silkies to hatch their wee ones. plus I dont, do not, not quite yet, hold of on it. . . . .dont want the snow yet because I think of the hour drive it takes me to get to work and then that drive backk home and that 's" word makes it trickier to drive on 422 while the big rigs are still flying by you at nearly 70, lol

And Sally, from thhe research I did, Seramas dont breed true to color like other chickens. My roo is from a golden duckwing roo and black hen and my two pullets are from a golden duckwing and silver duckwing pair. If you can research to get that american serama site, you can see that they now show many colors of them. When I first got them their bloodwork for npip, the fellow Jay told me they only allow the white to be used in show, but i am guessing, things are changing for them. I guess where these guys were bred they see them as living art and colors dont really matter, just temperment and their different body shape.

And i had a hen with a nasty looking but and was almost afraid to take her to get the bloodwork done. The fellow is head of the cochin/brahma club in my area and said it looks like she is maybe just drinking too much water. All their tests came back good so its not . . . serious? I also remember reading an article in my backyard chickens magazine under the questions where someone else asks this. If you get that magazine, read that, he makes some quesses.
hmmmmmm
