Hello, I am from Luzerne county Pa. I have 9- 5 1/2 week old chicks that are currently in a brooder on my enclosed porch. I have a heat lamp on at night, temp has been in 20s -30s...and on cold days (below 60, pretty much everyday it has been cold). We are moving them to their coop on Saturday. I was going to continue to do the same...heat lamp at night and turn off during the day when above 50. Sunlight should help heat coop too. Is this a problem? With the cold Temps when should I ween them off this?

Hi! Welcome!
They will let you know if they are okay. If they are outside without a lamp, they will cry loudly about being cold. No need to see them. You hear it!
When you finally take the lamp off, you go outside as the sun is setting. Listen to them. Go outside again before bed. As long as they don't see or hear you, it will probably be nice and quiet because they are okay.
I put my last batch of chicks outside at two or three weeks. By five weeks, they were not sleeping anywhere near the heat lamp. I gave them a few more nights to be sure that the cold wasn't too much. I got off easy, because usually like you I had to always worry I was doing it too soon. My ducklings will be going outside this coming week at three weeks old. Chances are, they won't need a lamp for more than a week.

Welcome from Cambria county!

Yes, our hens seem to cooperate quite well, you could move the 6 from the Marans to Elsa and reset the Marans with new eggs if you wanted, but for that to work she would have to commit pretty quick.

I knew it. Elsa committed yesterday. I now have 3 of my 5 nest boxes filled with broody hens and another girl threatening. One of my CCL girls, Sky, saw Honey's nest full of eggs while Honey was off eating and jumped in it. I moved her out so Honey could get back in but Sky was mad, growling and looking like a bowling ball for a while.

Ana and Elsa will apparently NOT share a nest. I tried prong them together in one of the bigger nests and Elsa immediately started attacking Ana. I hope these girls will share the babies, even if they don't share the nests. I'm probably going to devide up the 12 eggs that I originality gave the two girls between the three of them.

@Blarneyeggs, I'm glad to hear that the poults are doing well :) You'll have to post some pictures when they get big.

Welcome! I think they will be OK. Please consider to protect the heat lamp with hardware cloth or something similar, so the chickens would not accidentally break it and cause a fire.
