Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

We have been stuck in downpours now for a few days. my chickens with their mostly exposed 'summer coop' are looking a bit like they want back in the basement!

I threw down 4 bags of play sand last night / today and that has helped a LOT. since there is a plywood floor, it wasn't muddy, just full of water. the sand helped that a lot. hope everyone else is staying dry..I had a muddy day at the local motocross track!

Been MIA for 2 weeks prepping for and going on vacation, not going to be able to catch up so I'm just jumping back in here.

I'm just here to whine a little... I took the girls on vacation with my family to Outer Banks, NC and we had a great time. Hubs couldn't come along because of work so he was in charge of the chickens and garden while we were away. It did not go well :hit  He was working from 7am to 7pm so getting up early to do the chicken chores and then not getting home to check on them until late. It was 90 degrees here while we were gone. In my experience, the new chicks never ran out of water in a single day (1 gallon nipple waterer) but hadn't been so hot until last week. He very well could have forgotten to top it off or not filled it all the way up but he won't say, likely because he feels guilty. We lost 4 birds - a Delaware, a welsummer, and both of olive egg legbar mixes that @dheltzel
hatched just for me. The olive egg legbars are the ones I'm most upset about, I loved the way their little crests were developing and I was really anxious to see what color eggs they'd lay. I don't suppose you have any more of those pullets, do you Dennis?

I also lost almost all of my seedlings. Things that are too late to start again like peppers and tomatoes. That is partly my fault for not getting them out of their containers and into the ground before we left, but I'm still upset that he couldn't keep them watered for a week. Tomatoes are really the most important part of my garden since I like to can them for winter... I do have a bunch of volunteers, but they are likely unintentional crosses from the varieties I had last year and I'm not really sure what I'll get with them.

We planted our garden about a two weeks ago and we are just now starting to get tomatoes on so I wouldn't see why you still couldn't get and plant we just planted a few more peppers and gourds about two days ago but our green house has different sizes like if you want the tiny little seedlings or the started ones or ones that are about to get there stuff on them. I am sorry about your losses

Thank you so much! I'm not sure when our next trip home will be, possibly the end of June or maybe not until July, still trying to work out scheduling. Hubs will be along, so I may or may not be able to run a chicken train for others, but I will keep you all in the loop!

Planning to tend to the garden today... I'm hoping that if I transplant the volunteer tomatoes from the very far end of each trellis they are more likely to be true to variety. I'll have to buy pepper plants which means I'll probably miss out on my heritage Italian Marconi peppers :-( I'm debating whether to risk an unintentional cross by transplanting a black cherry tomato volunteer or starting from seed again and not getting any tomatoes until the end of August... black cherry are my absolute favorite, I look forward to them all year.
