She is very pretty, so white..i can't get over it.....she gets to run in the grass, i think that is what makes the difference. Maybe if she had only a dirt run, like my poor mistreated girls do...
tongue.png
, she wouldn't be so sparkly...I am glad she gets the grass!!

..yummy....I don't have many left now, just about a bushel left.
Yeah, ended up canning a bushel yesterday. Was going to take the "day off", but what does THAT mean anyway?!

...wasn't too bad, got to sit most of the time, plus Bug was napping & DH helped. The peaches needed to be done though, had them out of the fridge & in the porch to finish softening.
DH went out to the fridge and said, "hey, you missed a bucket!"...wha?!?
barnie.gif
..how did I MISS a BUCKET of peaches?!?...must have been an "UN-conscience blindness"
wink.png
...whatever....they need some time to soften too...cause I say they do! hahaha...just until Thursday or Friday, whatever the body says.

**ANNE- LOVE the memed-pic!!! TOO funny, and TOO true!!!

love the brooder concept! GREAT job!
thumbsup.gif
very neat, will have to keep this one in the front of the mind!!
The "chick" hotel..look at all the 'rooms'...

I know I already "quoted" this, BUTTTT...omgosh..
.I really read the recipe, this is too easy!!! WOW and I can use the peaches we put-up to try this whenever!!
I keep cake mixes around just because. I also like to make mixes, from scratch, then put them in jars.It is just like having tons of boxes around!!
You don't have the 'extras' that are in the box mixes either..nothing wrong with the boxes..I have enough of them in my pantry!

Thank you Maggie for the website! I have "pinned" it!!

LittleMissPurdy,
I had a large Rubbermaid tub but it lasted only a few days till they were too big. I lost a chick out of the blue yesterday and I thought maybe it was due to trampling.so time to make a bigger brooder. I am a waitress and we always have big boxes at work so I brought some home. I cut out the sides and taped them together. The "room" concept is really only a thing because the boxes are easier to tape together when they stick out like that. I read in a book cardboard boxes make poor brooders but I think this is great! When they need more room, I can just cut out another side and tape on another box. I'm using pine pellet horse bedding since its so absorbent and pine flakes over top. I can just skim the flakes off when they get dirty. The poopiest part is the hay where they're sleeping. I just take out the old hay and replace with new once a day and it's been really working well.

Well, yesterday, we tore down the kids' frame pool that we had up. It was just a $100 pool that we got on sale at the beginning of last summer. Long story short, I broke the filter and the pool got a leak. I guess they're not really made for the long term. Anyway, I convinced my husband to let me keep the entire frame setup for it to use as a big outdoor playpen for chicks next spring. All I have to do is pick up a roll of chicken wire to zip tie around it and some bird netting to put over the top. They'll be able to go out on the grass and play with plenty of room. The pool was 14 ft in diameter and 4 ft deep so that will give them just over 150 sq ft of playroom and lots of heads pace to practice flying as the get bigger. In my mind, a wonderful way to recycle :) We also saved the pump to the filter to use for hydroponics :)

Brian passed in April (OMG! Lmp, my b-i-l passed in April after getting the flu). Josh will be 14 in one week. He passed out today, and the doctors say that it is his heart. Here he is after his EKG. :th

hey, you know what..it is working for you, so...I think it is a great idea and you are using a resource that costs nothing!!

I have used a very large box too, still do, when hey are tiny.
I also use the bottoms of plastic dog travel/bed cages. They work great and are sooo easy to clean when we are done using them!! We made a "top" from welded wire and wood. we just stapled the wire to the 4 wood pieces, making a square frame...Voila- Easy Peasy!!
We could have used just regular chicken wire too, but the piece of welded was already cut.
I use newspaper in the bottoms, replacing with new everyday. "they" say not to use newspaper as it gets slippery when wet and can cause injury to legs, so I use a paper towel or two over that when they are real little, but when they get bigger..it isn't an issue. Hasn't been for me anyway..and it works for me.

We have tried aquariums too, and I do NOT recommend it.... they grow so darn fast that after changing them into 3 different sized aquariums in like..3 weeks...we had to come up with a better plan..that's when we took a walk through what we already had and "thought outside the box", so to speak..ahhaha, came up with the dog crate bottoms.
The aquariums were too heavy, obviously the bigger they get, the worse it became!!
It is easier to clean poo off of plastic than glass...just saying..hahahha
