If anyone has feed bags they can ship to me, I'd be happy to reimburse for shipping. Preferably if you have a good amount sitting around. I'm going to use them to hold in my straw insulation. Not for grocery bags right now. Priorities...

I am insanely blessed by the stuff I have received for Duckling! I am sending on clothing she has outgrown as well, but I have currently received so much more than I have sent. And such beautiful clothes!

I was worried because she had outgrown all of her sleepers, sweats... All but a few T-shirts! I now can relax for a year probably!

Thanks for all the great responses on adding heat for the chicks! I would certainly not usually add heat for the adults now, only when it is well below freezing (below the teens, generally). I just never had such young birds out at this time of year before, so I'm not sure what the right thing is for them. They are in the coop with the big kids, but they are separated in a dog pen with chicken wire on top, so they cannot huddle with the adults for warmth. They were in our family room until last week. They are mostly feathered with just a little chick fluff left. They are a lav orp, a buff orp, and an OE.

Here's the OE today, for instance:

They just look so little to me still, I worry about them. They looked ok during the day without heat, but the temps drop overnight, and I'd hate to come out in the morning and find any dead.... so you guys mostly think the babies will be ok in damp 40 degree weather without heat? Should be warmer Sunday and Monday, but looks like it will be in th 30s overnight on Tuesday here.

As for heat for the adults in the winter, I have done it every year since I statrted 7 years ago, and it has always worked well for me. It doesn't heat too much--the water in the electric heated waterer still develops an ice skim, but it doesn't freeze solid. So the coop still definitely gets well below freezing, but I've never lost a chicken in winter due to health (just predators), and we haven't had frost bitten combs, etc. And from my reading and experience, the red lights don't affect their laying cycle. It's a good point that a prolonged power outage on the coldest days could be dangerous for them--I guess I would have to commit to bringing them into the (unfinished) basement for a time if that happened. Not ideal, but possible for a limited time.

Fisher:

That's a nice ride(cousin had a 22' )....hope you and hubby are good boatman....landing a single engine 26' boat in obnoxious conditions is not for the feint of heart....my two cents....

Thanks, it will be a matter of learning the quirks of the handling...we are primarily launching into rather protected bays, so some wind effects but not tide or currents the majority of the time and certainly not while getting aquainted with the new ride. I would drive on the trailer with our 22ft Mako and doing it in the river with strong flow was certainly an adventure in learning how to compensate for sideways forces!

I think I have a good sized bundle of them out in the garage, I'll have to go look later. Hopefully, hubby didn't throw them out lol

Ann, I have lots of woven plastic feed bags, 100# size. Probably 200 or more. The danger being, if you pick up some, you might leave with a chicken or 3.

The dress was funny. She was a total diva about the whole thing.
When I initially tried to try a bunch on her, she finally dropped to the bed, and said, "all done!"

She kept her hands on her ankles until she was sure I wasn't going to put anything else on her.

HOLY h***!! How many chickens do you have?!?

If you know how many chickens you have, you need more.
According to chicken math, none.
I have two ducks that have been laying, and one still holding out.
I have ... I really don't know for sure how many chickens I have. I think it is 23. That would be .... Wait. Maybe 22. Ummmm... I think I have 12 that could be laying.
Plus three female ducks
Plus a female turkey.
I was getting 13 eggs a day, then 11 when the EE stopped. Now nine if both current laying female ducks lay.
