Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

This CL isn't handling the cold very well. Everyone is out and about today since it is sunny but she is inside shivering.

We are finishing the roof today to our run and hope to at least get plastic up for now to give them better shelter.

They get cracked corn. What else should I do for her?? I made them eggs yesterday. She wouldn't get off the framing of the run so I let her eat off the plate while I held it.

GHC:
You did what I would do.....if she is still having a hard time bring her in for 24hrs and let her get her game back....my whole crew is staying in the coop most of the day...it may not be the temps, but the drop that throws them off...if she was in real distress, I think her flock mates would huddle with her,,,,my two cents....

Check her over to make sure her reluctance to move is not due to an unseen injury...in particular I would check her feet for frostbite.
Make sure she has ample opportunity to drink warm water (not heated, just not frosty cold) and scrambled eggs are always a good treat, as can be warm oatmeal with raisins, peanuts and many high quality bird seeds...we use one available from Walmart as a treat, it is 15-17% protein so still worthwhile as a food, not just a junk food treat, canned tuna, baked or boiled fish and chicken are also favored treats for our birds.

Dear Fisher:

I think your birds eat better than me.....

don't forget the three I took!!!...also talked to Blarney about LAV orps and she seemed to have some trepidation over the perceived ancillary recessive genetics collateral to the LAV color...I dunno....I'll be trying some out....
True, last week I hatched some Legbars and Black Ameraucanas.
The little lavender am chicks is still not doing well. Laying on it's back in the incubator. I hope it makes it, the lavender chicks are very nice and I have a lot of potential homes for that one.

Hey T :

Good to hear from you....do you get the lake effect snows?....-15 is a pisser....our wind chill was down in the low singles...but this evening was out with the pooch and the wind has temporarily laid down...crew was huddled pretty tightly...
We do get lake effect snow. It snowed 5 out of seven days last week, it only accumalated to four inches. We had another flurry storm this evening, about an inch. The precipitation is forecasted to turn to rain about midnight and rain for most of tue. into a part of wed. the snow will most likely turn to ice and then melt in the afternoon.

Very fun day at the Farm Show yesterday. I was much more worn out than working all day at the farm. We walked a lot and stood a lot, and my 2YO granddaughter is heavier than she looks (no complaints, she wanted me to hold her instead of mommy and daddy, never turning that down).

Spent a while in the poultry exhibits. Not nearly as many birds as in years past, many of the breeds had only a pair to represent them. The grand champion was a Black Ameraucana roo that didn't look as good to me as the ones I let run loose on the farm! They has a few other Ams, but honestly the ones I see every day at the farm are prettier and more exotic than any of the Ameraucanas I saw at the show. Makes me tempted to show the birds I have, but I can't overcome my biosecurity concerns.

I did see some pretty longtails, Phoenix and Sumatras, and a pair of very cute Quail D'Anvers. I had to remind myself that the bantam Ams are just as cute and lay blue eggs as a bonus. Bantam Polish are tempting too, and the cochins and silkies were very nice . . . So many nice breeds, so little space and time.

I found a good read on basic chicken genetics, if anyone wants to get a better understanding: http://articles.extension.org/pages...or-small-and-backyard-flocks:-an-introduction

LOL...they are a tad spoiled...but they still try to act as if they are starving but DH refuses to share his cookies and cupcakes with them!

Talking about lake effect snow, I cannot believe how much snow we got at finger lake area NY. Every time I drove back to PA, it's clear when I got more than 18" snow there. And it feel much colder there when the temperature are the same.

They are gorgeous birds! My house is sale pending now. Hopefully, we will be ready for our new flock this summer if my job stays stable
