Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Now, now, Philly used to have a bunch of kewl places to hang out and bend an elbow....now that I'm a little longer in the tooth, I just don't get there all that often....

Just some fun facts...Philly imported 1,000,000 workers during WWII and was responsible for 30% of all WWII war production....also, at one point in time Philly was the 4th biggest city in the world...and had the world's best thinkers..(thanks to the Quaker influence)....every covered wagon going west was filled with 200lbs of salted shad from the DE river...Philly's biggest industry for a long while...my two preachy cents......

That is interesting! Lots of fun history in Philadelphia, too bad South Street went so down hill...

We are wanting to add some to the mix this spring...
Ayam Cemani are the number one pick.
Lavender Ameraucanas or lavender orphingtons
Sussex or Orlof
Maybe marans

On another note, we had only one hen laying and now we have about 18 laying. We changed up their food and gave them a little more light and bam there were eggs. Literally over night we went from one to a dozen. :) Now what to do with the 12 dozen eggs we have in the fridge!!

Hi all!

New to the BYC forums. Checking in from Pittsburgh!
Welcome from Bucks County!

Currently we have 6 ladies.

2 delawares
2 New Hampshire's
A brown leghorn
And one little black silkie

Currently I'm not looking for anything....unless of course someone wants to give me a large plot of land to raise more chickens and other animals on.

Thanks for the warm welcomes all!

Haha! Just a warning... I started here a couple years ago, wanting only 3-4 chickens in my backyard. I had a 1/4 acre plot (front and backyard combined). We just moved into a home with 5.32 acres. We have a couple more chickens too...

And maybe some turkeys.

I know Philadelphia has a rich and important history, I just don't want to be anywhere near all of that traffic and violence. Plus now I have the memory of that being where my Mom died.

Delco proud!

I'd love some Ayam Cemani too. They are so gorgeous! Dheltzel on here has a connection to some and Aurorodream has them now as well I believe.

Free Chicken coop? In Chestnut Hill....

That chicken math is amazing, right?

That's a gorgeous shed/coop! I love it. If they allow you to cut the bush/branch around it, it should be able to move out. Ann, don't you need a second coop?

@Auroradream26 has Cemani's and Lavender Ameraucanas. I sold all my Marans last year, my silkies laid more eggs than they did!
If you want dark eggs, get Welsummers or Welbars. I've heard Cuckoo Marans lay better than the other marans, but likely a lighter colored egg (seems to be the tradeoff, my dark egg layers are always lagging behind the others in productivity, but it got ridiculous with the Coppers, if I averaged 1 egg a weeks from my Marans hens I was ecstatic).

I will be seperating my lavender ameraucanas here within a week so I should have purebred, fertile eggs in a couple weeks :)

My Ayam cemani and still pretty young so I don't expect to see eggs from them till close to summer. The oldest ones are around 11-12 weeks old right now but they're all boys. The younger ones are 9-10 weeks old and it looks like there are a couple girls.

Our Ayam Cemani is 6 months old now, we're still waiting for her first egg.
Silver Welbar and CCL from @dheltzel are 19 weeks old and very red faced.
