Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hey guys how is everyone doing?? I haven't been on in a while.

howdy!
He is keeping me busy! The kids are debating changing his name to Zeus. I've committed the Cardinal Sin of letting him in the house. All that training I read up on before getting Bella went right out the window.

He is SO beautiful! Congrats!

Ok all...time to put your 'neighborly abilities' to the test.
We are looking for 1 or 2 new silkie roosters. We need to watch our genetics and I would like to find new blood for the pen. I have a list of 'needs' and since these are hobby birds I don't need to be in a huge rush about it.
-We want at least one to be a blue/black/splash, the second could be about any color.
-I strongly prefer the rather clean faced ones, I want to be able to see their eyes and prefer the clean faced look especially since they may free range on decent weather days
-although we don't show I prefer to find show quality boys to keep a nice pen and to allow chicks to be 4-H projects if any local kids are interested. I think of the term 'show quality' more as a way to avoid major faults on a bird rather than something I expect to go out and show. I have just found so many hatchery birds aren't bred to breed standards anymore.
-I prefer they be younger (nothing over about 8 or 9 months), so just new to crowing would be great.
-we don't want 'teacup' sized, they should be, at minimum, an average sized banty. Most eggs get eaten here, so no need for teeny tiny hens and tiny eggs. And since the future hens will be broodies we want them to be able to handle more than 2 or 3 eggs.

If you know of any quality breeders who have extra boys who just don't quite meet their needs let me know. I am willing to drive for the right birds.
@Sally Sunshine .... tagging you since you see so many folks with different breeds on the hatching threads

Wish I could help, but there are more than enough enablers here...

Wow, what gorgeous weather today! I was able to spend most of the day outside.

Super newbie question. What comes first a broody chicken or leaving her eggs in nest? For Banty girls. I really want babies from these guys

Eventually and not sure where to start. All of you guys with babies and broody hens has me thinking I should really try it... everyone else is lol. And they are small so it's really like half a chicken right? My hubby should go for that.....

Yup! Half a chicken! :D
Some girls go broody before laying. It just isn't common.
FF can be stored for as long as you want. Stir it every day, a weekend is okay. I made mine one hundred pounds at a time. It lasted about two weeks.
If you can't stir it, make it wetter.

You do know where you can get some LF lavender ams not too far from you, right? I have them seperated and giving me eggs :) First batch of chicks should hatch next week;)

Those are gorgeous, I want some! But we don't have the room, but maybe someday!

Guys I think I'm going nuts! This is the third time in two weeks I have a membrane egg, and I can't figure out who is doing it. I sat down with a notepad tonight, and I only have three ideas.

1. One of the old silkies has started to lay again (maybe because of improved nutrition and free ranging?)

2. The broody BSL with new chicks is laying the membrane egg.

3. The Olive egger that has gone broody is still putting out an egg.

Here are the eggs I collected today :

The brown egg is from the Legbar, The Olive egg is from the CCL/Marans cross (uaully I get two but her sister is broody). The four blues are from the CCLs. Two very light blues from the BSL (the third BSL just hatched out the turkey poults) and two white eggs from the Cali greys. I also got another egg from my Bielefelder, but I collected that earlier today.

I have 16 chickens in total:

4 CCL
3 BSL
2 CCL/Marian's
2 Silkies
1 Legber
1 Biele
1 Roo
2 Cali Greys

I am selling 4 girls tomorrow morning, so that may help me narrow it down. Just thought maybe you guys might have an idea on my puzzle...

I had the same problem with one of my chickens. I separated the suspects one by one for a day each until they laid their egg so I knew who laid what egg!

Dealing with "The teen years" is a necessary step on the way to become a grandparent.
In related news, I have a new granddaughter, born this morning. Her name is Olivia, and yes, the grandparents are planning to spoil her.

Congratulations!

Meet Remington.

Adorable! What a huge pup! Spoil him lots!

One of my extra boys chased her. They go to a new home tomorrow. Her sister is in a field across the road. Not sure what to do. Don't want to scare her farther away or back across road. I'm sure she'll come home eventually but worried about cars.

One of our hens goes across the road when the roo is pestering her. She seems so happy over there but I worry about predators so I chase her back home and lock up the roo. I suggest separating the roosters for the safety of your hens if you continue to have this problem.

@dheltzel . Regarding the turkeys pulling security duty. The turkey vultures were hanging around the yard today because it was raining and their wings were wet. Wheezy chases them off, and Tom gobbled at the noise.

Awesome videos! I really want turkeys but probably would need to build another shed first.

Yep Blarney:

Cardinal sin.....can't be saved....send him over here....I'll suffer through his abundant flaws.....and BTW no doubt he'll end up sleeping on the furniture and in the bed....

On another note..,imho, Zues doesn't fit him....we should have a dog naming contest.....I submit....Nickle.....

Nickle! I love it!! And Casper too! Although his Badger Markings are short lived, they tend to fade to all white.
