I'm sorry I gave all of you a play by play on my horrible day. I was freaking out. Still am. I don't really know what to do. So far I've lost about 30 birds. With probably 10 more sick. Some seem fine. We left to go get a defector. Im scared for the rest and my dogs, cat and Hedwig. Im afraid to go to coop. I can't figure out what it is.

I'm so sorry! I am heartbroken for you. The only thing I kept thinking was the lightbulb. Others will know but isn't there one that has mercury or something that is poisonous with chicks? Or cedar chips in bedding? Idk. I wish I could give you a big hug.

I gave all of them the food for first time today older ones first, then new and a little bit to bantams. My total death count is
9 of 15 seven week olds
2 of 25 2 week old bantams
5 of 5 ducklings
7 of 8 roo chicks

As soon as 2 of the Bantams died I thought food. When everyone started dying I switched out all over their stuff, gave them the all flock I had on hand and some grit and locked the door. Took the 6 older ones that still were standing and did the same. Hedwig never got the chick starter and was locked in my room. Everyone that wouldn't stand up is dead. Not sure how the little roo survived but now I have him all alone and don't know what to do. Still have everyone split up and disinfecting everything. Might still loose one of the older ones but the others seem to be back to normal. What do I do with the little roo? Ideal is sending me the same order again next week if I want it. Will he be okay for a week or do I need to get a few chicks for him? I can't believe this happened. I miss my hubby.
I am so terribly sorry this happened to you and your young flock, and that you had to deal with it all on your own today. It sounds like the food is a good bet. I would call the feed store to alert them. I would also send one or two of your birds to Penn State for a necropsy, asap. I would need to know the cause for sure, for peace of mind.

As for the little roo, I'd watch and wait for a few days. In case it is an illness and not the feed, I'd hate to bring more chicks in right away. He should be ok for a week if you give him lots of attention--or if he is ok after a couple days and you have access to chicks, you could bring in more then.

I will definitely get someone to look at them. I was told to only give the ducks water for a bit and take it away for 10 min then give it back for the first hour so they didn't get water logged I believe it was called. Apparently they can get sick from two much water right after shipping. I know it wasn't temp or anything because my 7 week olds don't have a heat lamp. I litteraly just thought the new ones were dying from shipping when I heard one of my older ones having a seizure and they had been fine. It was such a shock. Still have one blue Wyandotte that might die. She just isnt moving around as much as rest. Hopefully she makes it.

I just finally got time to read about botulism and I'm almost positive thats what happened. The way they died was spot on for it as well as how long it took for some. The only thing I could have done was flush out crop but it might not have helped and I've never done it so I probably would have done it wrong. Thank you everyone. Sorry again for the running commentary of awfulness.

Don't ever apologize for needing to share such horrible events...this may sound horrible in a way but I hope it was the Botulism. That would allow you the small comfort of knowing it isn't a contagion you have to deal with.

I am just so sorry for what you had to go through, and without anyone else there to help you through it...:hugs

I hope things are looking better today and that your hubby gets home soon. Sorry you've been put through this. It's hard to lose birds but especially when you're new to it. Hang in there.

Thanks guys. I hope it is botulism. It would be nice to know I'm done with it. No one died over night. Looks like my blue/red Wyandotte will make it! Little Roo is cuddled up with stuffed animal. Pretty sure he survived because he was so out of it when he got here. The ones that showed up fine ate the food. And the Bantams are running around like fluffy little nutballs. Do you think I could put him in with Bantams for a week? Im going to be working a lot till my bosses get home and I'm worried about him all alone.
