Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I'm sorry I gave all of you a play by play on my horrible day. I was freaking out. Still am. I don't really know what to do. So far I've lost about 30 birds. With probably 10 more sick. Some seem fine. We left to go get a defector. Im scared for the rest and my dogs, cat and Hedwig. Im afraid to go to coop. I can't figure out what it is.

I am so sorry to hear about your little ones....did you use the same feed for all of the ones who got sick? Botulism is a strong suspect if you did. If they were all fed from a new bag today I would call your vet tomorrow and ask if they know of any way for you to have the feed tested.

In the meantime... provide the surviving chicks with finely ground scrambled eggs and maybe small amounts of boiled fish, tuna, catfood or boiled chicken. Avoid anything salty.

Give them fresh water also, but clean the feeding dishes and drinkers with a mild bleach solution first.

Good luck and hope the worst is over.

This is absolutely terrible. I agree with taking away the feed and making scrambled eggs and cleaning out the dishes and replacing the water with plain fresh water. I'm so sorry you're going through this.

Don't touch anything or anyone if you go to the coop. I'd isolate all chicks you have and keep away from your kids, dogs, and hedwig. Wash your hands a lot just in case it's a disease, you don't want to spread it. I also agree with giving them scrambled eggs and other food. I'd completely clean out their boxes and give new bowls of water and different food. I hope you don't lose any more.

Did you give them all the new bag of food today? If your older chicks had the food for a while already, that might not be it. I worry that maybe the ducks/chicks you got from the hatchery may have been diseased?

I really hope no more die, I'm so sorry...

I gave all of them the food for first time today older ones first, then new and a little bit to bantams. My total death count is
9 of 15 seven week olds
2 of 25 2 week old bantams
5 of 5 ducklings
7 of 8 roo chicks

As soon as 2 of the Bantams died I thought food. When everyone started dying I switched out all over their stuff, gave them the all flock I had on hand and some grit and locked the door. Took the 6 older ones that still were standing and did the same. Hedwig never got the chick starter and was locked in my room. Everyone that wouldn't stand up is dead. Not sure how the little roo survived but now I have him all alone and don't know what to do. Still have everyone split up and disinfecting everything. Might still loose one of the older ones but the others seem to be back to normal. What do I do with the little roo? Ideal is sending me the same order again next week if I want it. Will he be okay for a week or do I need to get a few chicks for him? I can't believe this happened. I miss my hubby.

I didn't even know this could happen from contaminated feed... where did you get the food from & what brand was it? I'd definitely call where you got it from & let them know. The little roo will be ok if you can put him next to the others, but separated with a wire mesh so they can't hurt him.

Its from Tractor supply the dumor 24% starter. I will get it tested. I just don't know what else it could be. My kids are so sad. Im so sad. Lost most of our favorites from the standards. Going to call tractor supply in morning. Normally get it from feed store but didn't have time today.

Yikes I usually get my food from TSC. I hope I don't have a problem with it.... I'm so sad for you and your family. I'm so sorry

:hugs First, I'm sorry you are dealing alone.
Second, the chick is fine. Give him attention when you can (line your bra with a washcloth, and carry him around), and add a stuffed animal to the brooder. A mirror too if you can.
When you get replacement chicks, please trust yourself about the temperature!! It wasn't too low!
Give vitamins, offer sugar water and marbles to the water to encourage drinking.
I am not clear on what you meant about removing water because of the ducks. Ducks drink a lot of water to swallow food. They choke without water when they are eating.
