It is such a beautiful day! I have the 5 meaties and 4 turkey poults (6-8 weeks) outside in the big playpen/tractor just enjoying the sun. They're running around and flapping like crazy and they even found a little pile of leaves to dust bathe in lol. It's nice to see the meaties acting like real chickens and everyone stretching their wings.

Anne-I'm sorry you lost a poult :(

We had a great day out at the Gray's Small Animal Auction, Special Spring Saturday Event yesterday. It's at the Roots Market in Manheim that's regularly every Tuesday.

They accept animals from 6am and the auctions are scheduled to start at 930am but actually started at 10. I think because there were so many animals.

There was also a side auction for farm equipment and auctions for food in another building.

We took along one of the chicks we hatched on New Year that turned out to be a cockerel. He is an Araucana so we were not worried about someone buying him for meat. They don't have any meat on them. Here's a video of how the day went:

From what folks have said on here...(no personal experiences) Roots auctions does treat their birds a tad on the rough side....GreenDragon seems to to better and at least used to have larger auctions....other folks are more tuned into this than I......

Hang the bell on the cat yourself,,,then let the owner know why when you get to see them in person...you can also super soaker the cat a few times to encourage other places to hang....my two cents......

Auro:

If you get to throwing any good CCL boys, I'm going to be in the market in a few months....(think chicken train).....

All:

A question??? Just put 'Rusty Shacklford junior' into the grow out pen for his aggressive behavior with the ladies.....well, he's grabbed and tried to mount x3 different 14wk olds....(non-sexed, except the CCL)...so..are x3 of my x4 youngin's confirmed girls...or do I have a confused young man on my hands???

Shout out for a little help.

I am in need of an automatic egg turner. I've got the new cabinet incubator it didn't come with a turner . I have one here someplace and we cannot find it anywhere . Please, does anybody within driving distance of Ligonier Pennsylvania 15658 have an automatic egg turner they're not using that they could loan me for 3 weeks ? like one of those yellow ones they sell Tractor Supply or something . the trays in the cabinet are 22 1/2 deep by 15 wide , if that helps.

if anybody can help me out please give me a holler my phone is 724 205-4104 or 724 420-1358 . either one will do the second one's my phone, the first ones my husband. Thanks so much for reading and any help you can give.
Thanks ,
Karen

I'll let you know. I just switched boys to a young cockerel. Hopefully he gets the job done. His dad is ok looking and rather majestic but too gold and very little crest. The boy who just took over has nice crisp barring and a decent crest with an almost straight comb. I'm hoping a son from him will be even more of an improvement.

I was at the Green Dragon Small Animal Auction last year, but didn't have the time to stay around for the 630pm start. I did have a look at a few early arrivals. Some bantam pairs in boxes.

This Friday will be the only day of the year the market falls on a holiday, should make for a big auction. The Green Dragon is crowded enough on a normal day and I can't face it on Good Friday. Tinkering in the garage on something instead sounds good to me.

Tonight my wife took out family dog to be put to sleep. He was 14 and has been mostly blind and deaf for a while now, but went downhill very quickly the last few days. We adopted him at age 10 and gave him 4 excellent years. Gonna miss the little guy

I'm so sorry. We used to have problems with a neighborhood cat as well. Nothing like hearing a Mama calling for her baby to break your heart wide open.

Thanks. Yes, the Mama screaming is the worst. Today, when the poult was taken away in the couple's car, the Mama was calling to it and trying to follow the car. She called for the baby for about 10-15 minutes and then gave up or forgot.

My neighbor hung a bell on the cat, yay! I heard it as it ran away today. I hope that will be enough. I could put a little fence up to make sure my girls stay on my property, but cats will go anywhere. Especially if it is an outdoor cat, like this one.

Thanks. That's great your meaties are acting like chickens. What kind did you get? I am getting some "colored slow grow broilers". Hoping they will do well free ranging. What a strange bunch I will have soon. I will have midget white turkey poults, bantam Langshans, and colored meat chicks. I will be able to tell them apart for sure!

Thankfully, the nieghbor put a bell on the cat. Unfortunately, my neighbor is in a wheelchair, so I can usually only communicate by texts or calls.

I can't help you out here with the turner, but I would recommend you not post your phone number on the forum. It is public, and someone could use it for nefarious purposes. :hugs

So sorry you had to lose him. Sounds like you took good care of him for the years you enjoyed him. :hugs

Quick update on my one-eyed Romeo... terramycin should be here monday, in the mean time I have been cleaning his eye twice a day with saline. I haven't seen him drink water on his own since that one gorge fest so I'm still occasionally giving water via dropper just to be sure. He has eaten on his own as well... my 2yo was playing in his food dish yesterday and apparently peaked his interest. He didn't eat much though until this afternoon. I took his crate outside and set it in the shade by the chicken run so he could see his girls and get some fresh air. I added some scratch grains to his food bowl and he ate pretty well. It was hard to tell how much he ate himself because Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum kept sneaking his food through the wire crate.

So, overall he seems to be doing well... not ready to be out of the crate, but getting there. His eye is super gross though. It just keeps filling up with pus, he closes the eyelid and it just stays in there and forms like a cheese curd. It's really trying to get it cleaned out. I've been using warm saline which he doesn't seem to mind and a wet gauze pad to soften the crustiness and try to remove the pus... he HATES that and it's so stressful. Today I got the idea to squirting some colloidal silver in there after cleaning it and there was notably less pus at tonight's cleaning. I wish I would have though of that from the beginning, maybe we could have avoided the infection altogether.

Sorry for the graphic nature of my post, but I've found really little information about how to treat a lost eye and what to expect, so I'm sharing the gory details.
