Jap Quail or Button Quail are adorable! Especially when just hatched. If I'm not mistaken they mature quickly and lay already when they are 8 weeks old or so. I've had them in the past. Only thing is they are very nervous/flighty birds.
Japanese quail are the common Coturnix (Coturnix coturnix). Button quail are sometimes referred to as "Chinese Painted Quail", never as "coturnix", thought their latin name is Coturnix chinensis. They are about half the size and weight of the Coturnix. There are a number of significant differences in their care:
  • They are monogamous, single pairs are good. A single pair of the Japanese will likely result in the death of one of them, better to have a harem like chickens.
  • Coturnix are large enough to survive our winters outdoors, Button quail are not.
  • Button quail often go broody and will hatch their own young, Coturnix very rarely do that. Male buttons sometimes help with the chicks, though not all are trustworthy. Male Coturnix will not do this.

Aw that stinks. How old are they now?

I'm pretty sure that they're 4 weeks old now. I thought their body heat would provide enough for them to keep them warm (they're HOT little buggers!). Lesson learned. They get their way and the heat lamp stays on. They're eating like a bunch of pigs. I can't wait to get them off the heat officially and out in the tractor !

Now that I've found the thread again... Omg the update! Sooo my buggers are still in their brooder and are eating me out of house and home. They just finished their first bag of start and grow yesterday! Lil Mississippi isn't the cute little fuzzball anymore but damn is he handsome!

Bad news is is that we're still working on the coop... still. It's driving the both of us nuts. Good news is is that the floor is almost finished and we're working on framing the roof before we put up the walls. Here's hoping that the wood isn't too warped from all this rain.

So I think I'm dealing with cocci. I haven't lost anyone since I got them off my adult food and cleared everyones crop but I have three that are in a separate brooder so they don't get crushed because they aren't moving very much. Just started corrid so hoping by the time I get home it'll be getting better. So far I've only lost BR and EE but a dark Brahma and a Welsumer are both sick now. Also have two KC eggs mommys left that I'm trying to hatch. They are pretty shrink wrapped but not all of the veins are gone so oiling them up and hoping for the best!

Man chickens can be hard sometimes... I hope they will all be ok! :hugs

Even though it feels like I've always had them I'm still a newbie honestly so I'm hoping I'll have less drama as I go along. Learn something new everyday it seems.
