Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

While we were doing checks on everyone I realized my little frizzled Bantam roo Zappa has a pretty nasty set. Wasn't fun dusting him. Do you always cut the point off or only if there's a problem? I'm not sure if I should mess with them or leave them be. No girls have been hurt yet and he's never been aggressive with us. More like a small yappy dog.
The judge (Jamie Matts) at our 4-H Fair took the spurs off of a bird. Not much blood and the bird did not seem fazed at all.

We're at the beach. Pet sitter called this morning a bit distraught. A bird died. She was thinking predator, but we just reinforced that coop, immediately before we left and there were no marks on the bird AND it was the only bird with a problem -no feathers anywhere, no missing birds, etc... She offered to drive the bird over to the lab and have it tested and I didn't want to overburden her with that, but now I'm very curious.

We bought a pig at the Fair Auction, my son could not resist getting in the pen with him...

Oh no, I hope it was just a coincidence and that it's nothing serious

Romeo is 3 years old and never had his spurs trimmed prior to this, he has never hurt any of his ladies in all that time but he HAS confronted many predators over the years. I think the one spur just got so long and sharp and that's why it became a problem (two hens were spurred and ended up dying if you missed that post a while back). I've learned that the recommendation is if you keep a roo for more than 2 years they will need a trim. I don't like the idea of keeping them short/blunt all the time because they are his defense against predators, but they definitely needed to be trimmed for the girls safety.

Hubs also wanted to blunt Del's spurs, he's less than 2 years old so they really weren't long. It wasn't necessary but since we were doing Romeo's we just did Del's too (and Del's coop is much more predator proof so he doesn't have to worry about defending his girls like Romeo does).
