IMG_1082.JPG Hello from York, PA!

This guy is free to good flock! 17 week old white silkie rooster

If their appearance isn't a consideration then go with temperament and then size (if butchering for meat is something you are aiming for) or egg heritage (if you want to keep a particular higher level of egg laying genetics and one has them) or simply flock protection
(which one is constantly on alert and communicating with the hens?)
It isn't just about which one you like more, it is about which one will do more for your flock goals. It isn't an easy decision most of the time, but responsible flock management now will make you much happier later.

Well my goal originally had been for a protector. Batman is alert but I never go in their pen now without a big stick. He's an a**hole and needs to go. I don't need them to b friendly but I don't want mean.

I let my broody hatch two of my eggs but the rest I got from other people so I really don't need a special rooster for breeding.

All of my chicks are afraid. But the CL x cockerel is braver. When I let them out of their coop before the big ones, he will eat mealies out of my hand. I guess I will wait till they are bigger to decide. Know anyone that would be interested in a beautiful Icelandic cockerel?? He was the only one that hatched of three eggs.

So I tried the tylon last night and I think it helped! This morning when I checked only one sneeze and barley any snot. My whole body seemed to relax. I was so worried. I don't know for sure yet and I'm still doing the vet rx but looks promising. I'm never getting birds at auction again. No mater how good of a deal.

I got my last batch of chicks this week. Speckled Sussex, partridge Cochin, silver Wyandotte, grey ranger broilers from Meyer. Blue, white, black, and splash silkies, porcelain d'uccle, turkens, and a secret chick from mcmurry, and I have 25 Cornish cross coming tomorrow from a small hatchery in N.Y. Meyers are always great but mcmurrys silkies look great and they sent 5 extras! All set to give meat chickens a go. Got straight run of the Cornish and rangers so we can figure out what we prefer for next year. Anyone out there breed their own meatbirds? I had 3 Cornish girls I sold earlier in the year and I'm wondering if I should have kept them.

Congrats on the new babies!

I have a project going right now. So far I have one CX hen laying for me and every egg from her that I get goes straight in the incubator. I have to candle to see if any are developing. I have 1 CX roo that had been great but just recently started limping so I don't know if I'll ever get to breed him. There are 6 more young CX pullets that I'm raising up. I think it'll take a year or two at the very least to get the final meat bird that I'm shooting for, IF I can get any eggs to develope.

We might try to save a few girls too. Although it was only 40ish bucks total for 25 chicks including shipping so if they turn out well its pretty affordable.

Doesn't this look like it should be a band? I think we'll call them Bourbon and the Whites. Haha! Sorry guys, I have to rest my back, so I now have time on my hands...

Here are the two new broody Mamas. They are doing very well and co brooding. This is the Silkies first time, I think she's about 8 years old! She has a little blu Kotex stain from a booboo months ago. :)
