Hi, sorry to bother everyone again, I was just wondering if anyone has an old dog house or first attempt coop that I could have. Since it's looking like we are going to keep the ducks for a bit, we need to find a temporary "coop" for them. It doesn't have to be in good condition and it could be anything from a wooden box to a plastic children's play house. Anything would be better than the cardboard box they are currently in.

Awesome! When is the estimated hatch date? Now the hard part comes, to be patient. If you need any help, there is an incubation/hatching thread that I often refer to.

Hrm. Well it's day 19, and the heat's been around 102 degrees this whole time so I'm expecting a possible early hatch but I'm not holding my breath.

:idunno I give up lol. So much crazy going on and waiting for the babies to hatch now must be driving me nutty!

@Ellagance if you can't find one on here I'd suggest looking on CL in your area - search coops, dog houses, play houses, etc. Good luck!
 
Trying a different kind of brooder after reading somewhere here how a brooder with open sides helps chicks to get used to people better. The basic idea is that when we raise them in cardboard boxes, they can’t see the outside world at all and are rightfully spooked when they see a big hand reaching in to grab them. I also place mine in front of the window so they have a nice view of the outside as well.

This option lets them see the world and get used to people better. It is already working great, the chicks seem curious, and not scared of me. These are standard white Leghorns, so it will be a very good test.

In the original post, someone used a cardboard box and put some kind of netting on the sides. I have a few totes on hand and This one happened to be clear green. Spare window screen material was used on the sides, with packing tape on both sides so there are no sharp edges. I did a very messy job because I was rushing. If it works well, I will probably make a bigger better one in the future.

I do have one of my newer chickens that had gone broody, but she has only been so for a week, and it’s so cold I don’t want to risk losing these guys, especially since they have been through so much just to hatch!
 
I like brooding the babies in the coop after about a week. Basically, the very first time I have to change the brooder bedding, they go outside. They stay behind whatever fencing I happen to put up. So far, I have not had any problems with the adults hurting babies when I let them be together.
