Curious! Are turkeys or geese better at protecting the chickens?

Geese would be more active protectors since they tend to be territorial. In my opinion, turkeys are more of a deterrent due to their size. But you can't beat a turkey for love and companionship! Bug feathered dogs!

I can pick up a few chicks this evening! What do you have available? Do you have zebrinas?

No Zebrinas, but a few blue egg black sexlinks. Lots of (straight run) lavender and a few black ameraucanas. Legbars, Welbars, royal palm turkeys. Australian spotted ducklings (incredibly cute ducklings).

I know you don't have any for sale this year, but please tell us more about how your lavender silkie Amerucana project is coming along. Are they bantams? The hen pictured on your website is gorgeous!

The oldest are about 6 weeks.
The lavenders are doing pretty well, but that was true of last year's also. The winter is hard on them, I'm working on better housing for the silkieds and bantams (not silkied), since they seem a bit less hardy than the normal feathered large fowl (who all made it though last winter without issue).

What kind of fencing does everyone use? Our chickens will have a large covered run but will be out and about during the day. I keep going back and forth between an electric fence and non-electric just to keep them out of the kids play area

If that’s the case, a few T-posts and three foot fencing could do the trick.

Where did you buy the electric fence from? Are they very expensive?
Your post made me think maybe to use our chicken tractor close to trees, then ring a tree with portable fencing to safely let the chickens out for restricted foraging. Whenever we have had a hawk attack it has been out in the open field.

Yeah, I lost my white hen to a hawk today. Poor thing.
