Family members live about 5-10 min out of town on a farms.

What type to get depends on how many people you plan to feed. If you're going to have a huge family Thanksgiving dinner with extended family or you prefer a lot of white meat, you'll want to probably go for a broad breasted bronze or white. I believe Rural King gets them in the spring but it wouldn't hurt to call ahead. If you prefer dark meat and it's mostly just for your immediate family and maybe a couple guests, any heritage type should do (besides midget whites). If you get them in early spring and feed them a good, high protien feed, a tom should be a decent size by Thanksgiving. We typically butcher an extra heritage Tom each year for Thanksgiving. He's always the guest of honor for our feast, though we usually have a lot of extended family too. We've never run out off meat always had plenty. This year, I can't butcher any of my toms but we got a broad breasted bronze to try for the first time. I'm curious how big he/she will get

Bourbon Reds are the best. They get big enough to feed a whole family, are gorgeous and friendly. They are suitable for a small family after maybe six months. You really want them more like 18 months.
They are good mothers too.
They are beautiful too. We saw wild turkeys in Michigan and it has me wondering--what type of turkey would be the best for a backyard pet? Are they sexable early? Do we have blackhead in chester county?

All turkeys are essentially the same so pick what color you like and go for it. They make incredible backyard pets! We have bourbon reds, mottled blacks, royal palms, and penciled turkeys. We LOVE them all! It's such a wonderful feeling when they want to be hugged and snuggled and actively seek your attention :) I haven't heard of any Blackhead around but I'm Cambria county. Sex can be told early if you have at least one of each but it usually takes about 12 or so weeks.

Help!
The run has been so soggy recently! I found one of my girls has bumblefoot--what do I do? Soak it? For how long? Do I have to drain it, and if so--how to I keep it clean while it heals?

Soak the foot in warm water with Epsom salt in it. If you're lucky, you'll be able to squeeze kernal out of it but sometimes you have to take a scalpel to the and cut around it to get it out. It's very nerve wracking the first time you do it. Then just clean it with alcohol or peroxide (only the first cleaning though if using peroxide), cover it with Neosporin (without pain relief) and bandage. I use gause and medical tape to wrap it. Some people use vet wrap. Take around in between the toes and around the back so that it holds in place. The only thing you can do about the mud is either seperate her until she's healed or clean and super bandage it every day until it heals.

Liquid Bandage is supposed to be waterproof. I say “supposed” because I don’t see it written on the packaging online. However it’s in the description.
