Next year I want to raise some turkeys for meat. What is the best bred and when is a good time to get them? I would like to have them free range with my chickens if possible.
Bourbon Reds are the best. They get big enough to feed a whole family, are gorgeous and friendly. They are suitable for a small family after maybe six months. You really want them more like 18 months.
They are good mothers too.

Of course, if you want them for Thanksgiving dinner, BBW and BBB can be butchered at 20-22 weeks. Mine were not lazy eating machines. The tom still weighed about 37# dressed at 24 weeks.

You should preorder the number you want (I only got two BBW and five Bourbons) to be sure they have them for you. I had an idiot overly helpful woman try to pick out my birds. When she went away, I swapped a girl BBW for a boy, and managed to get two female BR. I still had three Bourbon jakes, but they were supposed to be food anyway.
I had no issues with processing turkeys. They were always destined to be food, and the large cavity made it look easy to clean. My husband and a friend did that part though.
The chickens are still too hard for me to just kill. I have to really psyche myself up to do it, and not let anything delay me.
 Which is why I still have too many roosters. :he I was supposed to kill ‘em, but someone said, “NO!! I’ll take them!” But never showed up.
