Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I-99 was not pretty this morning. It took me 1 hour 20 minutes to drive from Altoona to State College, which usually just 45 min drive. My car was slipping on the road. The local roads were even worse. :barnie Of course, less than half of my colleagues made to work today. I can do very limited things without helpers. Why I even bother to go to work?

Hey, you're back in my general area! I'm glad you made it safely! Roads weren't pretty last night for hubby driving home from Altoona either. Stay safe out there!

Bullchick, were your babies in a coop with the heat lamp? I only did that once and I had them in a box in the coop so that directly under the lamp was 98 degrees and th coolest area was still 80. I didn't trust them to go where it was warm--especially since I only had 4-6. Since them, babies are in a cage with a heat lamp in my son's room.

Yes, they were. The corners were still in the sixties.
As awful as I feel, I can’t say I’ll never put littles out in the winter again. I’ll just be sure it’s in the warmer big coop, and I’ll never again do it if the littles have had a rough start.
I can tell you one thing for sure, the remaining chicks aren’t noisy. It seems that the ones that didn’t make it are the ones that were never quiet.

When I bring you quail chicks, do you want any other chicks? I have BCM and F2 Olive egger pullets and a couple lavender ams. I have too many chicks right now lol

You honestly don’t know how much I appreciate that offer. If I didn’t need to watch my math, I’d jump at the chance.
So thank you, but no.

(I’m trying to push “post reply” but can’t do it.)

Lol, ok but I probably have ones that are the same size as your other ones out in your coop that could replace the ones you lost..... Just saying lol

I think it may just be that they were not in tip top health to begin with. Being noisy may have been showing that they were chilled or distressed. Back when I was breeding canaries, the cure-all was putting the puffy bird in a cage with a heat bulb and holding at 90 degrees. It doesn't mean that all babies require that (and Heaven knows how SICK my son got of sharing his room, lol!). You can always tell yourself you were selecting for hardiness...but I feel for your loss. Keep us updated on the quail--I don't have any, but I think there are beautiful and really cool!
