Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Here's a finished example of what I'm trying to do... nest box on the outside to maximize floor space since it's a small coop. It will be attached to a much larger run though and the nest box will be bigger and maximize all of the space from the corner to the door frame so the shutter are fully covered.

That is very good recycling good luck. I love the idea

In today’s episode, we add the water. No sweat for the quail inside drinking, total panic for the mother trying to keep her baby from drowning! :th

great idea & re purposing!
@FluffyButt789 has good ideas, keeping it simple with little inside space might be better. One root bar if only a couple of full sized birds, closer to bottom. Might also help keep them from any drafts coming in through play-windows?...just a thought, never converted a play house before.:)
I really like your pallet coop, looks roomy.

@FluffyButt789 , How goes the leg issue?

I had planned to make another pallet coop, then this playhouse fell into my lap. The pallet coop has its problems, it would have been better elevated so the coop itself was shorter and they would have more run space underneath. My rooster has a hard time getting up to the roosts bc he's so big. I learned from it and built it better when I did my sister's pallet coop (I'm sure I shared pictures of that but it was a few years ago). Planned to do the same for this one, but the playhouse was free and saved a lot of time and stress of cutting pallets apart!

Nest boxes will be on the OUTSIDE of the coop, definitely not taking up space inside, they'll be mounted to the window but completely outside of the coop. Unless I'm not reading your comment correctly. *like the attached picture, this is another little coop I built on a pallet base.

I have full size birds, this will be a breeding coop for like 1 rooster and 2 or 3 hens... or a temp grow out pen between brooder age and tractor age.

So if I just put a bigger ledge in front of the nest box window I could eliminate the lower roost. I think that would work. It took me a few minutes re-reading your comment to get the visual.

Ah, yes I understand now. Having the nesting box outside of the coop, but accessible through a window, makes complete sense. Cool ideas!

Under a severe wind storm warning near the shores of Lake Erie. Everything is locked down and we are preparing for a power outage & downed trees. Won't be able to take care of the chicken's leg today. Tomorrow then! :fl

I'm so annoyed that on the one warm day this week we are dealing with such high winds. I had planned to do some work outside finishing dismantling the old runs to make way for the new. Already have downed trees reported across at least one local road here.
Seriously!! Then the bitter cold again tomorrow!

:welcome Welcome from Berks County! Technically speaking there is no such thing as Non-gmo chickens (because they're domesticated animals, and by definition selectively breeding for traits you like is considered genetic modification).

However, I know exactly what you mean, and what you're trying to avoid so I'll try to help the best I can. If you need strictly Organic raised chicks, that's going to be a bit more difficult, and I personally don't know anybody off the top of my head that could help.

However if you would just like chicks from a local farmer that has all of his birds outside in good conditions with no funny business. I do believe @dheltzel should be firing up the brooders soon if he hasn't already. He normally has a very large selection of chicks, ducks, and other poultry available.
Thanks for the info Fang. What a great site. Oh, we didn’t make ourselves clear, we meant chicks from hens raised on non-gmo feed. But I don’t think anyone has this situation around. We’ll probably be looking for a grange feed store that has non gmo feed soon if anyone knows?? M&J
