I still feel so awful about my flock getting picked off. I just wish I knew what happened.
I should have another run ready for the chickens in a few days. They are fine in the coop right now, but we have chickens to let them outside, not keep cooped up. I just don’t think I’ll ever let them free range again.

I I am in NW Pa living on 35acres. We retired early and started a hobby farm...it’s been great! We have an S shaped pond for our last name..and the 43ducks just love it..we. Have. 19 Chickens and a rooster one goose, 30 rabbits, 3 goats, 2 pigs and 3 dogs..it’s our piece of heaven up here ...which is ironic because I grew up south of Pgh, very fancy girl..never thought I’d end up a farmer, but it was the thing for us!

Sounds like a wonderful place

I'm near Erie. Your place sounds amazing!

I'm sorry. I'd hate not knowing too. Try setting up a trail camera to catch whatever critters are snooping around your coop? I still think if it was during the day and nothing was left, it must have been a large hawk or eagle. Any other land critter would have caused a ruckus.

I lost a duck that way..granted it was only one, but I understand..and..mine are absolutely free range..I kept them in for a day and the silence was deafening...I missed the happy quack...you’ll get there I’m sure ❤️

I had one raccoon attack years ago. I only lost the chicks sleeping in the run. I lost two babies inside the coop (I don’t always close the door) on two separate occasions after that. Last summer I had a few picked off as juveniles. This year I lost... I think three juveniles. But full grown ducks?!?! I was trusted to keep them safe. I sincerely thought they were just on nests somewhere. Especially since one returned unscathed. I swear if I’d known, I would have locked them up. I locked the chickens up for most of the day after the first disappeared. I let them out around five, and by seven another was gone.
Anyway... I will get it right. I have to.

Still have 6 hens and one roo. No eggs being laid.
How old...are they free range..I’m new to chickens but I have ducks that I cannot find eggs because they are free range...not one egg from 28 females! But I was told about chickens they need to be in the coop until morning?? No clue if it’s true

I free range my chickens and ducks. I dont let my ducks out till 8:30/9:00am. To me it seems like that is when they are done laying eggs. But sometime I will find a duck egg in the chicken coop floor. My chickens free range at a young age. I have a hen that will take chicks and raise them. I block everyone in at night. There are days I will not let any birds out. Depends on weather, if they are doing the feilds, or if I need to deture a fox from getting any birds. I am a stay at home mom.
