In my experience, the boys are. I coo when I see the video of Steven the day the broodies brought out the chicks. He taught them to scratch around, and the moms went to eat and drink while he watched them. I don’t think a non-Fisherlady roo would be so cool.

OMG @fisherlady, I am SO in love!! :love Got any extras?❤ Are the boys as awesome as the girls? Every time I watch your videos I just melt into a little love puddle.
The ones we have are spoken for. Yes, the roosters are as good as the girls. They feed the babies and it isnt unusual to find chicks tucked under them at night on the roost once the hens take them up at 2 or 3 weeks old.

They are still quite rare, because few have heard of them and seek them out. Also rare are Mini Silver Appleyards. I have pair of them and so far like them a lot. I don't have Calls. When I wanted bantam ducks, I thought I'd invest in a hard-to-find breed and make them more available. They certainly reproduce well, I have about 50 now, mostly females, that should be coming into lay this spring. I sell their eggs for $3 doz to eat and they are very popular as they are exactly the size of a chicken egg. My Welsh Harlequins lay super size eggs that are hard to get into cartons to sell, I separate all the XL and jumbo cartons just for them, but the bantam duck eggs are a perfect size for eating and selling, no recipe adjustments needed.

I like Australian Spotted ducks can eat Japanese beetles. I have huge beetle population here. I will only have chickens this year, but I'm considering to get ducks next year. Are you able to tell male and female baby Australian Spotted ducks? I don't mind to have one boy duck, but I don't want to have two or three boys chasing my chickens. I know you are able to tell most Welsh Harlequin by color.

Chickens are quite good at eating the beetles too. Ducks are at their best when you need slugs and snails to be gone. They eat a lot of worms and grubs off all kinds too. For bug control higher up, a taller duck, like the welsh harlequins might do better. Also, Australian Spotted ducks can fly like a mallard (meaning very well). They generally fly back to their home or flock, but it is worrying to watch them go. In my 8 ft aviary, they regularly fly from one side to the other, they seem to enjoy flying much more than any other poultry that I have.

Our fence is only 4ft, so it will not work for those Australian Spotted ducks. If welsh harlequins also eat bugs and beetles, they may be a better choice. Our chickens were never interested in beetles at all. They were actually afraid of beetles, so I thought no chicken eating beetles. I guess it's just depends.

Perhaps you feed your birds too well and they don't feel it is worth the effort to go after them. That is certainly a factor with how well cats are at catching rodents.
I love ducks for many reasons and the larger ones will be better suited for running in your yard and not flying off to a pond somewhere. If they can make a mud pit somewhere, they will, and that is the exasperating part of keeping ducks. They like to be messy or wet, often both.
