Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I went to the Allentown Fair last night, and looked in at the poultry. I knew I was late to the party, judging was done and all, but I was still surprised to find only about half a row of chickens and a row of pigeons. The rest of the poultry area seemed like an overflow from the rabbits (lots of rabbits!).

It was my first visit to the Allentown Fair, so I don't know if that's the way it always is here or if I just came too late.

Youngsters growing out are looking good. Next year I should have chicks from Leige Fighters and Ayam Ketawa (Laughing chickens), as well as all the usual breeds.
I had to Google both those breeds. Wow! Every time you post, it makes me want to come knock on your door and see all the cool birds you have! (Except I don't dare, because I know I'll just want more of my own!)

Hi all. I’m new to this site and just found this forum. I’m in SE PA about an hour outside Philly. I haven’t posted much but I’ve been doing a lot of reading. I have spent years taking care of chickens at garden centers I’ve worked at but this upcoming spring will be my first official flock. I’m looking to maintain a flock of 30 or so Dual Purpose breeds Jersey Giants, Naked Necks, Black Australorps, White Rocks, and either New Hamps or Buckeyes. This will strictly be a utility flock. I have no intention of keeping chickens as pets only as food. I am wondering if anyone knows of any upcoming poultry shows in the area? I would like to start this flock with good genetics as opposed to hatchery stock but I have to be realistic about pricing and availability. Any and all advice is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Two 17 year old cats that are sisters. Their brother died 4 years ago from cancer. Also have two labs chocolate 3yrs and black 2yrs. I have lots of interesting plants both potted (wintered over 63 in the house last year) and in the ground. I also have a large vegetable garden that I am still building. I currently have about 300 veg/herb plants in the beds. At full capacity next year it will be 500-600. We bought this house 2 years ago. It was a farm in the 40’s and we are in the process of turning the property back into a farm. We have just over 3 acres.

Question for you experienced folks: If a 2-month-old chick puts up its legs in response to a much bigger hen like it intends to fight with (non-existent) spurs, does that mean it is definitely a cockerel? I just saw my spitzhauben, Ansel, do this. I thought from the beginning he was a boy owing to his large size... However, he does not yet have any definitive boy characteristics other than size and behavior.

Welcome from Cambria County!

I let the birds out this evening, then returned to the porch for a bag of feed. I had it over my shoulder with the top in front. I was happy when the string pulled easily, and a steady stream began pouring into the barrel from the partially open bag. Can you guess what happened next? Why, yes! The feed ripped the rest of the top open, and the barrel fell over. The nearby birds sounded the alarm, and then there was a stampede.

At least it wasn’t wasted.
