Yes, straw is fine. The wood chips are discouraged because of how they work. They say they are hard to get out of the sand too, but depending on your scoop, they should come out fine. If you missed my post a month ago, you can zip tie 1/4" hardware cloth to a pitch fork, and it becomes a huge litter scoop.
As far as removing the sand, some people don't remove it annually. It depends on how it looks/smells. If you are getting all (or most) of the poop out, you can possibly not have to change it. I won't say "ever", but the article said it had been a few years.
Anyone want a dog that just peed all over my bed? I stopped long enough to take care of the problem, so "just" is relative.

I know it was an accident (he seemed really freaked out when it was happening) but I am tired. Re-making a bed is not what I want to do. Dealing with the sheets and comforter (I threw them in the tub for tonight) is not something I am looking forward to either.
So... I got a chicken magazine, freeze dried worms

, a TSC gift card, 4 bags of feed, and 2 dozen new egg cartons for Christmas. Well... pajamas too. So I can be snuggly warm while I am in the coop!

Anyone else get more chicken related gifts than personal?
I forget who asked, but dogfood is okay for the chickens. I see more things on "no cat food" than no dogfood on this site.
Thank you for the info.!..the run and coop I'm starting w/ is not too large..I think maybe a small pitch-fork would be okay, would have to try it out, and definately just a cat-poop scoop would work fine for the coop, plus the coop ha a pull-out try for cleaning , so that will make it easier..sorry to hear your doggie had an accident..is he older?..For christmas I got some clothes and Hubby has put-back some $ for the chickens I'll be getting in the spring and their must needed items....

So im getting the hatching bug especially since my DM got us an incubator for Xmas but in trying to restrain myself til feb!! Still telling myself I don't want a bunch of chicks in the house all winter but you guys are killing me!!

Yes, it is better than a disease but needs to be taken care of promptly because food is not passing through and they are not getting nutrition. She could have two things going on also. The stress of a crop not working could have caused her system to be weakened and she developed a respiratory infection in addition. But check her crop to see if it is large in the morning but if it feels like a water balloon in there, then she definitely has a sour crop.
what makes a crop "sour" & how would you go about "fixing that?...For future reference...always good to know..and also, is this something that is common?

I found a few things on line, one was to use Olive oil to help it pass. Here is one link with more information about it. ( I just googled Crop on a chicken)

But I am not about to make my chicken throw up, so hopefully she is good till I get her to the Vet tomorrow, I will keep everyone posted on what they say is wrong and what steps needed to take to make her better! :)

I think it is lemon juice. As for fixing it, you can cheat, and just buy a jar of the sauce in the grocery store. It is very common.
The dog is 4. I think he has an infection. He has a few other symptoms.
you make the chickens drink lemon juice..
