Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Yikes! We have a coal stove, and only spend about $300 per heating season.
Yep, we use my Grandmother's Pot Belly cast iron stove, although we could use straight coal in it we also use a lot of wood, since we have a good source for it. With combo of wood cost (chain saw use, tow fuel, etc) and coal cost and even the once in a while supplemental kerosene it cost about $500 yr for us to heat. Trade of is making sure we are here to tend the fire regular, or the kerosene heater once every 24 hrs. But beats the heck out of fuel oil prices.
We tried it a couple times. It was interesting, but we only ended up with around a qt of syrup. It was fun, though.
I'd love to have the trees/acres to allow us to at least try the maple syrup process once or twice. And even if I decided not to do it I would find someone local who would tap the trees in exchange for a couple quarts of finished product. Only thing is though that it takes a huge amount of sap to make a gallon of syrup... so would need plenty of trees.
I seem to remember something like 50 gallon of sap to a gallon of syrup... is this right?

Thank God someone didn't say "pics or it didn't happen".
Who said there weren't pics??? LOL
Electric is expensive too. Hell, all heating is expensive!
Yup, why I insist on us using the wood stove as much as possible to make the oil heater not turn on.
Please add me to the map zip 18438..
Welcome, and done!

Awesome! Looks like a stole on your way...once you figure out how.
I have propane heat. 3 years ago we spent $6000 to heat our house for the winter. Hubby went and got us a wood stove. Now I just have to feed the stove and make sure the fire doesn't go out. Keeping warm is so expensive :(
YIPES!!!
What's the best way to make a homemade incubator? I have aquariums, lights, lamps, heat rock, etc. Are there any must DON'Ts?!?
That's a Sally question.
Define 'close to you'. My zip is 19375. I would like Comets.
'Close' is defined by how far you want to travel to get them once they come in. 90-ish miles one way is probably not worth it, but that's your call.
Depending on when they are arriving. I will be heading from here to NJ the weekends of March 22 and April 7...so could courier for you guys.

And this is why I'm willing to buy maple syrup!

@ Blarney - I can't help but ask... Is your name really Bobbie?

Thanks for the wine suggestions! I may actually have to go find some of them to try. I would love to sit down at dinner with a chilled bottle. I honestly an a bit upset I was genetically denied that luxury.
