Wingstone, the barred broilers from Reich held over for longer times pretty well. I'm lazy though. When I'm sick of them, I don't worry about finding time to process them - I make them an appointment and they get to go for a ride in the truck...

For those of you new to raising meat birds, be aware that different breeds and ages of birds will result in the need for different cooking methods. If you're accustomed to eating tender grocery store chicken that's 6 weeks old and has never walked more than a couple feet, you might be disappointed in older heritage birds, if you are expecting the same texture. Generally, the older a bird is, and the more it has used its muscles, the more flavor it will have, but the trade off is that it will lose tenderness. These birds are better cooked at lower heat for a longer time.

If your preferred way to cook chicken is to pop it on the gas grill for a few minutes, you might be better to stick with a quicker growing bird, like a Cornish x. If you enjoy soups and stews, this is where older heritage birds shine. Barred broilers and Freedom rangers are somewhere in between these two.

I'd recommend trying a few of several types of meat birds and seeing how they fit into your usual cooking methods before committing to a lot of any one type.

I have two Blue laced red wyandotte cockerels that are 14 weeks old now. Anyone interested in one or both of these handsome gents? If not i will be processing them next week. Please pm me or reply here I can give you pictures of either of them. Both are very tame nice guys.

We raise our own beef. May 1 ours is going to be processed. We have beef cows. We don't butcher the cows. They go to auction when it's time for them to go. Cattle are herd animals, so you might want to get a companion for him, plus they eat better when there are two. Two days before they go to the butcher I don't look at them when I feed them. It's easier that way. I had 4-H steers it was hard to sell them at the end, but the check was nice to look at while taking it to the bank.

WOW! I went away for the weekend to have the boys party and have 500 posts to catch up on.....LOL! I am soooo far behind you guys!!!
Aawwww... hope the little one does better. At least he has a good chance with someone taking good care of him.
Thanks for all the well wishes for baby Si, friends. He is still trying to keep going, and is still wobbly. He loves it when i lay him on my chest and let him cuddle. Poor lil guy! I don't know if he is gonna make it, but I didn't want him laying there alone.
That's awesome! Will have to get directions from you, with 4 grandsons, I'm sure one would be thrilled with this cake.

He went shooting the geese (wild Canadian!!!) and chasing them with a metal rake! I need to get my ducks definitely allowed where I am so I can finally report him for all the illegal things he is doing! I am starting to suffer from extreme stress because of his BS! We were visited by the biggest bear we have ever seen back here in the hollow last night. The dogs alerted us at first. DH was scaring him off with a flood light and he kept coming back. He busted a window out of my coop, so for now everything is boarded up. DH has to go out of town today and will be back Thursday. We'll do more re-enforcing this weekend. Admittedly, we hadn't predator proofed the coop to our liking yet anyway.

So all 30 chickens are fine, but I'm a bit nervous. It will keep coming back, no? What are you best bear deterrent ideas (other than getting rid of the darn garbage)? I am not comfortable enough with guns to use them when DH is not home.

Ugh.
