My parents have never had electric run to the goat pens only to the horses when we had them! They have them fenced in with chain link fencing! It is about chest high and it keeps my moms big dairy/boar goats in! Maybe you should look into chain link fencing!

Mine only goes out there if he has to...but he's still well aware of my math....and since I can't have anymore...I figure I'll help....

I agree, except that I need a short term plan. Not having a plan is why I'm working to get back to 'good' cuckoo Marans like I had years ago. I'm writing this down so all y'all can help me stick to it.   If I'm going to feed 70 adult chickens, over the longterm, they need to be good ones. Spare roos have a date with destiny tomorrow.  Some of my old layers may be going for soup sooner rather than later. I don't need a couple dozen eggs every day, even after subtracting the ones I pull out to hatch.

I'm tired of the black copper Marans, so most of them are moving into the layer flock as soon as Motorcyclechick is ready for her eggs from me. I'll keep the blues, along with the BC hen that I got from Swataracreek. Might keep the BC roo to try making golden cuckoos somewhere down the line. The BC chicks I have hatched will be headed to Craigslist.

I want to concentrate on the cuckoos again.  Some of the ones I have now are headed for the layer flock too. I'll hatch most of the dark eggs from the  good ones, and I have cuckoo chicks and hatching eggs on the way.

I want to separate the faverolles into 2 breeding trios. The remaining smaller hens will be moving to the laying hen group, and the extra roo will be going to live with a neighbor and a flock of pet chickens.  Most of the fav chicks I've hatched will grow out before I decide who stays.  I've got shipped fav eggs in the 'bator too.

Same story with Ameraucanas. My plan has evolved to include 2 nice roos from Heatherscooby77, so I have to sort thru the chicks already hatched and decide which ones will fit into the new and improved plan.  Then on to set up trios with the new roos. 

The duck eggs in the bator now will end up on CL. I'll pen up the nicest ones for a while to hatch my own replacements.

Next week, I'll have Narrigansett turkey eggs to hatch.  Most of those will go to my friend to raise for her CSA - I'll grow out 6-8, process most and keep a nice trio.

For a while, the plan included adding Delawares, but I'm rethinking that I might wait a year. Still have to decide. 

So, I have to resist being enabled into getting speckled Sussex at H&H.

Back in my restaurant-chef-ing days, we used to get cases of 4 1 gallon red wine vinegar that had the mother.  Maybe gallons or wine vinegar from a restaurant supply might have the mother.  If the live bacteria from the mother is the reason for using the vinegar as an innoculant, then in theory it should be the same or a very similar strain of bacteria. And wine vinegar still adds acidity.  Maybe I should try to track some down. Til then, pints of Braggs ACV for almost $4 aren't happening for chickens at my place.

 

If anyone is looking for organic ACV with the enzymes "mother" still in Lancaster Ag sells one gallon and 2 and a half gallon containers that I have been using for years with my chickens/ horses etc. I buy the two and a half gallon jugs and they are I think 19 dollars last time I got one. All of their products are wonderful.

Our plucker is the tub style, and Radioman and I carry it pretty easy... I equate it to moving a washing machine. Problem isn't the weight, it is the awkward shape and no where good to get a hold of it. with a rachet style strap and a hand truck/dolly they can be moved pretty easily over longer distances as long as it's not too rough a surface.
Glad you got a new deck out of it! So have him do this project beside anything else you happen to want redone/replaced!
OK... not sure if this would work for goats or not, but I remember my Dad tying a light chain around the neck of one of our 'escape artist' sheep, the chain was like a dog collar (low on neck, near shoulders) with a long tail that hung down to about the sheeps front knees, and on the tail end of it he secured a 1 ft piece of light pipe (chain attached at middle of pipe) Pipe would just sway harmlessly when sheep was grazing or walking around at average speed, but if it tried to run fast or jump the pipe would bump against it's front legs and it didn't like it and would stop. Also prevented her from jumping for same reason.
Another option may be leg hobbles?? I don't know how well a goat could climb if legs were hobbled.

LOL on Mork... we joked about that before, but I don't think I could subject the poor guy to that one! I spoke to Tish this morning. We are shooting for next Friday as pick up day. It is about a 4.5 hr ride one way, so will be a long day.

We are shipping up the towels and stuffed animal tomorrow so she can introduce them to him and put them in with mama and the litter... when we pick him up we will get our towels and stuffed animal back and it will be his bedding and 'comfy buddy' for the ride home, because it will then smell like his family. The towels and stuffed animal have been in our bed for the past week so they smell like us now... so he will actually recognize our scent when he finally gets to meet us. We did that with Mindy when we got her and she had practically no transition anxiety... made things so much easier on everyone!

OK... what is a 'no climb' fence? I may need to know for future reference since I am starting to think goats are pretty cute little critters.

It's actually fence for horses. I am sure the goat can and will climb it.

If you want Delawares, I have 3 pullets I am selling.
I still want a Bourbon Red or 4 and I have 6 BBB on order. I want to see if I can get the Red to cover them and get naturally reproducing turkeys with good flavor and decent size. Hahaha... I am not happy unless everything is a project.
I sold my Ams to Heather only to hatch at least 2 dozen so far - 1-2 dozen are still in the incubator. I guess I didn't think that out very well. So, I regained a project I already eliminated. I have these darn bantam Ams that I need to figure out what I am doing with.
See, I like one flock I don't have to think about - the wheaten Ameraucanas where that flock. I hatch, I keep the best and sell the rest. The MFCs require a lot of room. I finally have black b.Cochins and that means the beginning of my chocolate bantam Cochin project. I have a LF choc/mauve Orp project going. I just hatched the Tolbunts for a money making project (I think they are ugly birds with pretty coloring).

I understand. I can't limit myself though. Way to many projects to be able to do that.

ETA: The large ducks and geese are going. They are being replaced with Calls.
LilBrownie, if any Cochins go, it will be the MFCs. I was trying to sell them earlier in the year, but no one wanted to spend what I was asking, because I was asking for the whole flock to go (otherwise I knew I'd back out of getting rid of them). Now that new babies are hatching, I am very anxious to see what this year's new breeding pens give me!

As much as I like them, I've let them out of the pen again. They were still in the pond at dark last night. If they lay eggs in their nest, I'll hatch some. If they get eaten by the fox, I'll have to write it off as them living free, dying free. (Cue Steppenwolf music here)

You are going to the swap in Sharpsburg in June right?? My mom I think is gonna go the MF route for herr pen so I may need a roo or a hen or 2 so let me know if you are, and if you will have any you want to part with!

Cool looking fence, but have to agree with you, looks like a goat ladder to me. Would make a great horse fence though, depending on the weathering ability of the metal used.
It actually looks like pretty cool fencing for a yard, would keep out stray neighborhood dogs for sure! We priced out chain link for the yard last year and WOW! I was dumbfounded by the price. Chain link may be the ultimate in yard fencing but their has to be a reasonable alternative. I'll be doing some more researching pretty soon on it, just too many other projects going right now to take that one on.

We could be long lost sisters. I turn everything into a project too.

One of the reasons I think I want the Delawares is to - wait for it - have a project of experimental sex-link meat birds of Delaware over Marans. It seems like a fine purpose for the Marans hens whose eggs are too light to hatch as purebreds. I'm supposed to be getting Delaware hatching eggs from an ALBC dual purpose flock in june, after she has hatched as many as she needs for her own use.
