We have had the chickens in their coop for 2 weeks now. Here are some pics.

Front of the coop

Close up of front porch and pop door, it will eventually be painted.

View from people door. We have storage here and access to the nest boxes.

Poopboards, they will eventually have pdz.

We have 2 of these homemade feeders, they are awesome!
That is nicer than my house!!!!
Feed question ... what does everyone use, bought, made etc. Just interested to hear everyones thoughts before I start to get food in prep for the chickens arrival. Any answers would be greatly appreciated!

I am going to a feedmill now. DO ask what is in it. Tyrone Milling only has either 12 or 14% protein. Most have 16%.
SallySunshine has a link on how to make FF (fermented feed). But I will tell you quick how to do it.
One bucket half full of food (smaller if you have a small flock) cover with water (warm will get it going faster) and add a "glug" (aprx 1/4 cup) of Unpasturized Apple Cider Vinegar with Mother. Stir. Cover loosely or with a towel. It must breathe! Wait about a day the first time. After that it will be ready in about 6 hours. Add more food and water (no ACV) daily. Stir twice/day.
It makes the birds healthier, and they will eat less after a short time. That saves in feed costs!
I just need to vent!! I am so mad at my son my head is spinning. Let me back up to the reason why. Three weeks ago week purchased 2 toulouse geese at an auction. Of course we had no idea of their age. For the past week I have been reading up on geese and wondering and wishing I knew their age. I've learned a lot here from here. So today I went into the pen to get out a board that I needed and for some reason remembered that I had read about geese covering their eggs. I remember seeing miss goose sitting in a certain spot the other day and though hmmmm. I go to that spot and found 5 eggs buried. We took 3 of them and set them outside on the table, marked the other 2 and left them. Later on we were making a new brooder and the hubby sends the kid to get the 3 eggs and put them in the house. Before we realize he got out the other 2 as well from the nest and washed them with soapy water. I know it probably wasn't the right thing to do but I put 2 back in the nest to see what she does. Why don't kids just listen!?!?!?!
Again with my husband. Males think they are doing something good.
Just wanted to share my story of today...

I was cleaning out Patches (broken leg duck) cage... And I pulled her out of the cage and placed her on a traing pad so poo that was on her didn't get everywhere. She was at least 2 feet away from me.. I was reaching into the cage when I heard her scrambling about and then quacked... Next thing I know she hit my foot with her beak and VERY quickly started to bite my foot!!! That little ************ managed herself over to me JUST TO BITE ME...... Only I would have such an ungrateful duck!!! Left me a nice red hickey like mark on my foot....
"Hey! I just got that the way I wanted it!"
I came home to about 10 dead chicks and 8 more struggling to live. I can only blame myself. Obviously the essential oils were toxic to them and killed them. I can't imagine how. Whoever is still alive tomorrow will be going outside while I set up the other plastic tote brooder and I will be burning my new brooder. I am afraid to try cleaning it again for fear the illness will still be present adn I am going to keep losing chicks. Whatever the chicks had before didn't die during my bleaching. The new babies have the same crap and I killed my chicks trying to save them.

I am just so upset right now. I don't know what else to do. The babies in the other tote brooder are fine. OMG. What have I done?

You need to hatch a few dozen more to make yourself feel better. Not kidding. You learned something. Now take a deep breath, and know that it was an accident.

Yeah, that too! No matter how hairy/fuzzy/feathery or slimey your children are!!

Yes, I am posting again!!
I was cutting up egg cartons last night (for my hatching eggs) and while cutting the top off an old one, I noticed a recipe. I thought I would share. I also think it would be great if they still had recipes inside egg cartons!
Egg Cheese Dip

1 medium onion
10 boiled eggs
1 lb American cheese
1 lb Sharp Cheddar

Grind together, then mix with mayonnaise until a spreading consistency. Add salt to taste.
Store covered in the refrigerator. Remove ahead of time to allow dip to soften up.

Mash from the mill, I throw in some extra( grains) I make FF, they also get veggies(our scraps) & they eat the yard.
big_smile.png
OH, & some scrach to entertain them. I also put egg shells( free choice) in a cage cup & grit. They also have a feeder of dry mash to eat from when ever they want. WOW , do I have some spoiled little piggies or what?! ** Chiques chick is right..they are little garbage disposals.

I ended up burning a brooder last winter after a batch of chicks I hatched out of shipped eggs ended up being carriers for something. I had chicks in the brooder for 3 weeks that were perfectly fine & within 48 hours of that batch being added I had 4 dead babies & the rest were sick. Everyone got culled & the brooder went to the burn pile. Needless to say, I do not get eggs or birds from that person any more.

Broody question...so our "snuggles" started sitting yesterday, was going strong at bedtime so we gave her a few more eggs. This morning she's up and outside with the ladies and green jeans... Go check the coop and a different chicken was on the nest! Now this little darling has all her feathers pulled from her chest so obviously she's the broody one... Was snuggles babysitting? Could they possibly be "sharing" the brood???

Obviously at some point she will need separated from the rest of the flock, how and when do I do this? What about snuggles?!? This is supposed to be easy..... Lol
Sometimes they share a nest & sometimes they just egg-sit for each other. Just let them do their thing & they will work it out.

Being that mine has no money or vehicle of his own he doesn't have that option. He went out & sat on the porch to clear his head & came back in to admit to being a donkey's rear & ask forgiveness. Since I'm well aware he has some issues going on right now that we are trying to get his meds properly adjusted for I'm more lenient than I normally would be to these situations. He was forgiven & managed to NOT have to go sleep with the chickens after all.

Since I started fermenting I use half as much feed & get 4 times as many eggs.

My kids are allowed to collect anything but the turkey eggs & that's only because they aren't allowed to open the turkey pen. We had a hen escape 2 nights after I got them because kids didn't properly close the door. Luckily Tom called her back in the next morning & she walked right back in the pen all by herself so I didn't have to string anyone up. I don't have any broodies (though it would be nice if I did) & all of my eggs head to either the bators, cartons for sale/swap or the fridge to eat & they know which pens go where & how to mark them. The 6 yr old just collects & brings them all to me or JJ. The 9 yr old knows how to date the eating eggs & where they go in the fridge & then brings the rest to me. JJ knows how to date them all & where they go but sometimes has to ask about breed markings. He always knows what pens he pulled them from though.

We actually have a MUCH smaller one that my husband made for grit. I love them. We fill them up and don't have to worry about feeding for days. I still check everyday though.
