Hey everyone

I know I don't post a lot, but I do lurk and read everything. I'm just not very talkative. Anyways, here's an update of my chicken-life.

I just picked up three chicks from SilkieSensation today. Super excited about the new additions! We're building a new tractor-like pen for the five biggest ones we already had so we can get them out of the house. They're getting wayyy too big for the brooder. And stinky.

I've been getting a little worried about my chicks' genders lately and was wondering if anything seemed like a red flag to you guys. I know the only sure sign is an egg or a crow, but it's nice to have an idea.

They're all supposed to be pullets, but you know how that goes.

It was nice meeting you today & getting you some new additions for your little family. I forgot to tell you. They are all off of lights completely during the day & only get them turned on at night when temps drop below 50F. Since you have them in the house, they shouldn't need lights at all. I think you told me there were a few smaller ones in with them that still needed lights so it definitely won't hurt them to have lights on them for the littler ones, but definitely not needed for these big girls.

My daughter, Hannah (9), is in the middle of her first hatch! She used her birthday money to buy silkies (eggs actually) and her own incubator (which acrually sucks, so I am building one for the next hatch)

The best is to hatch a clutch yourself and be able to watch the feather growth of each one. Female wings almost always grow rapidly, along with tail feathers, and then shoulder feathers. Judging within the same breed. Your boys will still be looking bald in comparison to the gals. This did prove very wrong for me ONCE with a Barnevelder chick that feathered in slower than the pullets and the roos, and turned out to be a pullet. I guess nothing's 100%? The combs and waddles are obviously better signs, but who wants to wait that long??

It was nice meeting you too! =) It's funny, but the Marans I got today is actually the smallest now. Our Wyandottes look to be about a week older. And we don't have the air conditioning in, so it's kind of hot inside after all that warm weather; they probably don't need a light at all at this point.

Tell me about it! I keep reading all this stuff online and from people who have had birds that look like mine to see if I can figure anything out, but it's difficult. I've seen people have opposite ways of telling what bird is what, and each way works for whoever has it. I don't know what to think.

Oh man. When I got home I saw the size difference, and was like, "Wait. I thought this bird was older." I was so confused haha. And I see what you say about the Wyandottes. They grew fast and are as big as the blue I got from you despite being a week or more younger.
