Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

My Dh built me 2 mini coops in my basement. 2 Levels and I put flouresent in for extra light. So, at about 3 weeks they've outgrown the brooder, and get moved to the basement. This way I get a good head start on the pullets for egg laying. Either way, they're inside for too long, and stink to high heavens by the time they go out.
I'm thinking Popeye!!
In the fall and winter I can keep them stored in my basement unrefridgerated. I did the float test on many different dates, and the ones over 1 1/2 months were going bad. So, I used that as my guide. It really was neat to do on so many different age eggs, and see the direct effect of age. My basement is warming up now, so I have started putting them all in the fridge. BUT, when in doubt do the float test.
i forget, floats, bad or good?

I was thinking, "Oh that's a great idea!" When I started reading your post, but you lost me at the stink.

My mother would have a fit. She already thinks I'm crazy because we now have 17 chickens (including the growing chicks) and I still want more! Our backyard isn't big enough for another coop, though.

Floating is bad.

wow, if you play your cards right here you could have a lot of semi free labor,,,I prefer long island tea shots and have experience building coops.
MMMMMM long island iced tea

I have 2 dozen EE eggs in bator, will share if hatch goes well.

Hubby wants to see how we go with the 6 we are getting on the 12th first (Clearly I am already working on the chicken math when I haven't got any chickens yet LOL) ... I am not sure how many chickens would fit comfortably in the coop - the last owners said they had 12 in there but I don't know ...

I don't want them to be all squished up.

2 babies out! This is my first hatch. I am so nervous. I have read all about hatching and watched videos. I don't think I will sleep tonight.

Off to the ER this morning, lil one tumbled out of bed last night and didn't bother telling me until 10 mins ago that his shoulder was more sore today, upon looking at it he now has a little pokey out bit on his collar bone - wish me luck, I feel like the worst mother in the world

I was 13 months old, and fractured my skull. Took 3 days of my screaming for my mother to bring me to the hospital. She was a little faster when she pulled my arm out of the socket.

I know the feeling! I slept very little during my first hatch. It is exciting and scary and when it is over, you don't want to go through that again... You say as you clean and reload the incubator.

Oh ****!!

What are the dimensions of the coop?

Not sure exactly, I think it is just over 8ft long, 4 1/2ft deep and about 4ft high at the tallest point - can go measure it tomorrow - not going out now lol hubby has been telling me about some Dark Skies movie that has me all creeped out LOL

Ok, not going back to do quotes.

I want jello shots!

No, I wasn't out doing chicken stuff..that actually sounds fun compared to ripping up carpet that has been down for at least 30 years and had multiple spills on it. The carpet padding had disintegrated in some spots, and melted to the floor in others....there's a (large) hole in the floor that leads nowhere and simply had carpeting put over it. 1/2 the floor is obviously hardwood, and 1/2 the floor is just planks, there's a seam between them that is uneven. There are random staples all over the floor, some of which are so rusted that when I went to pull them, they disintegrated. So now I have little rusty pins in my floor...yeah it was a fun 24 hours.

The ducklings are adorable...almost make me want more...specifically scovies.

So my duck is finally laying on a regular basis! YAY....but of course now I wonder if the 3 that I thought were also hens are drakes instead...grr...

And the sebrights are laying...anyone wanna incubate them?

Tonight DH and stepson were sitting out back...DH comes running in and wants me to come out (note, we had a power outage...so it's REALLY dark out there) he and stepson had heard and were still hearing yelps from a coyote....running along our property line!!! By the time I went out, it had crossed the road and was in the neihbor's back yard...still entirely too close with my chickens!
