Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hi all, I've been catching up on posts since I introduced myself two weeks ago. This group is chatty! I like chatty. Anyway, I'm ready for more chicks. Has anyone had experience with Hoffman Hatchery in Gratz, PA? I want to pick up my chicks in person, this time, if possible. Thanks!

What are you looking for? hatchery stock, breeder stock or just some layers?

Sharron, I had hoped to go there today myself but I knew first thing this morning that I just wasn't going to have time to go. I might try next Monday though. Can you tell me anything about how it went and what was there that is related to chickens? Do they auctions fertile eggs or chicks or pullets? What about coops, feed or other poultry related items? If the sell chicks or eggs, or anything really, what kind of pricing did they sell for? Sorry for all the questions, just really interested.
they normally don't sell poultry related things per say, just what who ever wants to get rid of, sometimes still air incubators go though, some look brand new, sometimes waterers, feeders, like i said, what ever people want rid of, now chickens, yes, all kinds altho you have to know your chickens cause they don't tell you, sometimes they have fertile eggs, again you just guess at what kind unless someone like me takes fertile eggs and mark them, the auctioneer doesn't know what blr wy , blue wheaten marans or buff laced brahma's are tho

, believe me, i won't be taking any again, but you can pick up some really nice chicks sometimes, already half grown to fuzz. i took some chickens down today, i got 4.50 for some and 7.00 for others, which for down there ain't bad, the old timers there are tight

altho sometimes what i take they open the purse a little
like today, what i got was really good for them to spend, and i ended up with a pair of owl pigeons, or suppose to be a pair, anyway, that was a mistake, i thought my husband wanted them, he thought i wanted them for a friend, but anyway, 11.00 for the pair!!!!! believe me, thats way cheap.

Hey Lisa:

The girls are in the new coop. I will move him at night after the girls fall asleep....not quite sure which night ....

The water is a 2liter soda bottle....the tape really doesn't work well better to use rope...pretty easy to do...one thing to remember is to put a pin hole in the bottom of the bottle to let air in as the water is drank....
so the watering nipples are threaded the same way as the bottle thread------is this so................because that would be so so easy----and I will definitely do that! good to know!
or did you have to rig up the nipple system somehow if it doesn't share the same threading?

thank you so much for posting your pictures of your frame of the coop. It helps to see the beams etc when planning.
I doubt I would do the tar thing.......
I would love some vinyl tiles............looking for leftovers as I am trying to build it with recycled materials and keep costs as low as possible.
I am pretty sure I had some somewhere yet have not found them.
plus it seems the vinyl tiles are called by different names........linoleum or........vinyl etc.........so when I search craigs list I don't always get useful hits.

I plan to put down some old plastic car floor mats in key places so that when they are soiled I can just take them out and let them soak in water and bleach for awhile. This might help save the actual floor surface a bit.

My lean to roof wont be as steep as your roof...............I still do not have tar paper so I am inclined to stain and seal the roof wood and then just apply the shingles and hope that that is sufficient. some people also mentioned stuff about how to place the wood for drips etc.............so I know it should be in 4-6 inches from the edge of the roof wood......and I am not sure but sometimes something else is applied to move dripping water................if I can simulate this or build materials on hand I will.........otherwise this will just need to last a few years till I build a new and improved one!

Swarthmore is not far from Wayne------where I am at!

Might not be completely obvious in these pictures, but we covered the bottom of our coop in adhesive backed vinyl tile.

Insides were coated with roofing tar. It's worked great so far at keeping stuff from sinking (stinking?) into the wood. As a caution though, make sure you let it dry completely. I put the girls in before it was t entirely dry, and some of them got stuck when they decide to roost in the rafters. In the end, I carefully pried their chests off of the tar, then let them out to forage while I cast sand on top of the still tacky tar. The poor things had black toes and fluff for a few weeks afterwards.

Lisa:

I drill a whole in the bottle top, then thread the nipple in place....use a dab of silicone to ensure a good seal....

Hoffman hatchery does not let you pick up your poultry in person or even come on the property due to bio security. All orders must be mailed from there:

MCL:

Here's a couple of places you may try....its late in the chick season....\

Pickering Valley feed, Tractor Supply, http://www.hhpoultry.com/index.html , http://www.greendragonmarket.com/index.php (an auction, friday nights)

I also think a few folks on here have chicks or young birds: Blarney is fairly close....and I think Sally Sunshine (Berks) has some birds for sale...you might PM them...

Lastly, here's a link I found useful.....http://www.albc-usa.org/documents/chickenbreedcomparison.pdf

Hope this helps
