Another option for the heat... since it is so warm right now they won't need much of a supplement. You could try a 60 watt lizard lamp. They are ceramic coils that radiate heat but don't make any light. You just put them in the metal brooder light shell like a regular bulb. They come in a variety of watt ratings for you to choose from. We use one in Gracies broody hut last winter to keep her water from freezing when we didn't want her exposed to light all of the time. Worked like a charm. They are more expensive, but do last a long time, and can really work well to fill the little niche of needing a bit of heat but no light.
Available at about any pet store that sells reptiles, also at places like Petco and other similar large pet stores.
We also used them for our meaties this past spring when they were in the brooder (first 2 wks) They seemed happy with the more natural cycle of light/dark also.

Brinsea makes a heat pad on stands that works well for smaller numbers of chicks, the leg stands can adjust up a bit... when they are cold they go under, when not they just hang out elsewhere in the brooder. It is probably available from other companies also, but I am familiar with the Brinsea one so mentioned it first.

If you are getting pullets that are 9 weeks and older you will want to give them grower/finisher. I prefer to give my chickens non-ruminant meat proteins. So I don't give my ladies Purina, DuMor, well any commercial ration. I get game bird products because they have animal protein in it. I also don't like to go over 1% Methionine, which is an artificial protein. I will also say that I am breeding my chickens. I also think that stuff you get at tractor supply can be way over priced. If you want something at tractor supply there is a brand called Manna Pro. Also farmers helper for a treat is awesome. Manna Pro and farmers helper have fish meal in them for protein. Because you are going to have a small amount of chickens, you can definitely be fine with smaller quantities, ie 5 lb. bags! You can give young chickens mealies, just make sure they are eating grit.
 
I have some EE pullets that are free to a good home. They are black Ameraucana/Cochin crosses. There is 4-5 of them. I wanted to offer them here before I put them on craigslist. I also have a blue slate turkey tom, he has a sight issue. I would recommend this guy be for Thanksgiving dinner. PM me if interested!
 
Day 11. By this stage the developing bird is very obviously a chick. You'll also be able to see the tiny egg tooth' (used to chip through the shell at hatching time) developing on the beak. Only ten days to go!!!

I put #3 in with the other two..it is doing just fine with them. They are all about the same size. I showed them all the water..dipped beaks and I had scatter the FF on the towels, it has dried from the lamp, they are pecking at it. The other three eggs, still no pips, but holding out hope

Have a question for anyone with an answer...The chicks were chirping really loud, saw they were away from the(heat) lamp area-to the farthest corner. So, I turned off the lamp. Now they are back to that corner(were the lamp was pointed). The temp in that "spot" WAS 93...NOW down to 90....too hot for them?? the room it self is appro. 85ish ...very warm. Can I keep light(s) off in the room? If they were with Momma, it would be dark right now....That is what I am thinking anyway....is this wrong?

The room is very warm. They are not 'looking' cold/chilled...any and all experience/opinions would be appreciated...Thank you-Danielle

, after 44 years i think its a given that for putting up with me that he have the toys but then i always bought him his toys.
 
Anyone have any helpful insight to getting rid of fleas? We have been using Dawn dish soap sprayed around the house but they just seem to keep coming back. Will ivermectin or valbazen help my dogs and cats and if so how do i figure the dosing? Any help would be appreciated! :)
